👏👏👏 we can do this too Etown!

This Banned Books Week, it's worth remembering where Central York stood five years ago and how far it has come.

Five years ago, our district made national news for banning hundreds of books and resources from classroom use, from a Sesame Street special to children's books about Rosa Parks.

That put Central York on the map for the wrong reasons. It reflected a board that chose divisive culture-war fights over strong academics, sound facilities and responsive policy.

Citizens for Central York School District began because students, parents and taxpayers deserved better. Our campaigns succeeded because the people of this district spoke up, showed up and voted for change. Today, candidates we endorsed hold 8 of the board's 9 seats.

Candidates and board members endorsed by Citizens for CYSD fought alongside the community to end two rounds of book bans. In the majority, they protected parental choice and our students' right to read. The new board adopted an updated math and ELA curriculum. It maintained our facilities and planned for the future. It passed policies to regulate AI in the classroom, ensure the district hires qualified and principled solicitors, and create a whistleblower program to combat waste, fraud and abuse. It authorized a girls wrestling team. And it has celebrated our students, student-athletes and employees along the way.

The results are clear. Test scores are up, the culture is strong, and our rankings have climbed. This year, Niche's 2027 rankings named Central York the #1 school district in York County, with the #1 high school too.

That's what happens when a school board stops banning books and starts working for and with its community.

What a great turnout to celebrate our freedom to read! We gave away more than 80 books, many bookmarks were made, cookies were devoured and conversations filed the air.
