🫁💪 STRONGER MUSCLES = STRONGER BREATH
Did you know lifting weights can help your lungs work better?
We often think of cardio for breathing, but resistance training does a lot for your respiratory system too:
1. Builds your breathing muscles — When you lift, your diaphragm, intercostals, and core have to work harder. Studies show 5-12 weeks of resistance training increases maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure (MIP/MEP) — basically, stronger inhale and exhale.
2. Improves lung volumes & airflow — Combined aerobic + resistance training has been shown to improve forced vital capacity (FVC) and peak expiratory flow (PEF), and reduce resistance in both large and small airways.
3. Reduces lung inflammation — Regular training can lower markers of lung inflammation like exhaled nitric oxide, and help balance pro-fibrotic proteins that affect lung tissue.
4. Better posture, better breathing — Shoulder presses, rows, and deadlifts open up the chest wall and strengthen the muscles that hold your ribcage tall — so your lungs have more room to expand.
5. More endurance for everyday life — Stronger muscles use oxygen more efficiently, so daily tasks feel less breathless and you can stay active longer.
You don't need to go heavy to start. Think: controlled breathing through each rep, 8-12 reps, 2-3 sets, 2-3x per week. Exercises like deadlift, incline press, seated row, and overhead press were used in the research protocols.
Breathe in to prepare, exhale on the effort — let the weight train your lungs, too.
