7 DAYS LEFT TILL THE FIRST MEETING OF THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR 🦷!

Meet Kimberly Chapa~
My name is Kimberly Chapa, the PDS/ASDA Treasurer, and I’m a biology major. I became interested in dentistry through my grandma. She had to get extractions due to her eroded teeth. Watching her struggle to eat influenced me to become a dentist to help others in need no matter how big or small the case will be. I joined the Pre-Dental Society last year as a freshman so I can be able to acquire information about the field. This organization has helped me so much by providing information on summer programs, early acceptance programs and everything about dentistry…you name it and they’ll provide! This past July, I participated at the San Antonio dental school for the summer program LEAD. It is an exciting program to partake in because it gets your feet wet into the field of dentistry when it comes to labs and the admissions process. Some of the labs I participated in were drilling, waxing, sutures, and impressions. During my time at the summer program, I found out that I got accepted to the UTSD-UTRGV Early Acceptance Program! As for my hobbies, I love watching movies or playing with my dog. Overall, I’m excited for this year. A quote I’d love to share is that “Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what gives life meaningful.” Let’s make this year great!

We would like to congratulate this year’s applicants for the Dental Early Acceptance Programs (DEAP) for UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry (), UT School of Dentistry (), and Texas A&M College of Dentistry () Post-Baccalaureate Program. Sofia Garcia gained acceptance to the 3+4 DEAP at UTHSA. Christian Ochoa, Julieta Rey, Joshua Mathew, Kimberly Chapa,Natalie Pruneda, and Yanzel Vanegas were accepted to UTSD Houston. Last but not least, Victoria Garza was admitted to the Texas A&M College of Dentistry PBP. We are so proud of their hard work and commitment in taking a large step towards their goal. We’re honored to have them as members of our society 🦷❣️

UTRGV Pre-Dental Society takes the Alamo! Thank you, Dr. Malone for giving us a tour of the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry! We enjoyed seeing this beautiful school. We’d also like to thank the Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE) and all their staff for our extra hands-on session to help us practice with indirect vision! The dental student panel who took time out of their schedules to answer all of our questions on dental student lifestyle and opportunities at UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry were amazing! Every visit to this beautiful school we fall more and more in love with dentistry, we can’t thank you all enough!! Thank you! .

Yesterday was our organization’s Second “Shaping Healthy Smiles in the RGV”, community initiative. The experience teaching the children proper dental hygiene, was so amazing and heart-felt . With this community initiative we hope the students have a great learning experience on oral health as well as having a bit of fun playing our dental activities/games. 😊🦷 .

A HUGE THANK YOU to our GoFundMe donors, and the following dental offices for dental baggy donations: Mercy Dental, J. Last night, we successfully hosted a Rio Grande Valley dentists’ panel!! Our panel included 8 dentists and 2 dental school students with a wide range of various specialties. All of them had a unique perspective and experience when dealing with the topics of, "The journey through dentistry", "Maintaining a practice", and current hot topics sweeping across the field of Dentistry. Their passions for dentistry is so inspirational, it is what we hope to aspire to. .

Our officers and members were so excited to have the opportunity to volunteer at the Catholic Charities Immigration Center of the Rio Grande Valley. It was such a humbling experience to help these people in need. Witnessing the courageous humanitarian efforts first hand has given us a unique introspection of who we are as a organization and as members of this community. Thank you .
