Beekeepers of Chowan County’s Educational Booth at the 2027 Chowan County Regional Fair. Theme: Celebrating 250 Years of Growing & Harvesting Freedom (and Honey) 🇺🇸🍯🐝

Did you know? Only 22% (94 million pounds) of honey consumed in the US is American honey. The other 78% (434 million pounds) is imported from ten (10) countries: India, Argentina, Vietnam, Brazil, Ukraine, Uruguay, Canada, Mexico, Turkey & New Zealand.

You can support American beekeepers by checking the label & choosing to purchase honey from a local beekeeper.

Within a hive, one little bee can’t accomplish much on her own. THANK YOU to beekeepers Cindy, Lisa, Marvin & Elizabeth for contributing materials, their creativity &/or time to this year’s BoCC Educational Booth entry.

🍯🐝🎉 It’s all about the honey ~ BoCC’s June Apiary Day was a sticky sweet hands-on learning experience for our new beekeepers! 🍯🐝🎉

Experienced beekeepers (BoCC President Jamie, Marvin, GC) along with BoCC 2026 Bee School new-bees (Gene, Ashton, Heather) & Hives for Heroes NewBEE (Tracy & husband, Ried), pulled 5 honey supers from the hives at Beekeepers of Chowan County’s Teaching Apiary during our June Apiary Day. 66 quarts of honey qwas extracted. At approx.
3 # per quart that’s 100 pounds of honey!! If you didn’t know ~ honey is sold by the pound in the US. 🍯🐝

The BoCC Teaching Apiary is where our bee club maintains hives to teach new beekeepers hands-on. Experienced beekeepers lead Apiary Days monthly throughout the beekeeping season doing hive inspections, splits, Varroa mite washes & treatments, harvesting honey + extraction, colony preparation for Winter, etc. Attending Apiary Days for hands-on mentoring is one of the many benefits of being a BoCC member for $10/year.

Hives for Heroes is a national non-profit connecting service members & first responders with experienced beekeepers for hands-on learning & community. https://hivesforheroes.org/ 🇺🇸🐝

🐝🐝🐝 CONGRATULATIONS!! 🐝🐝🐝
new beekeeper Ashton Bockelman on completing his NCSBA Certified Beekeeper today at the BoCC Apiary!!

Ashton is the first of our 2026 Beekeeping 101 students to complete his Certified Beekeeper. He has become an active member of our club, attending monthly meetings & Field Days at the BoCC Apiary where hands-on beekeeping is taught to new beekeepers. Ashton also took home two honey bee NUCs 🐝🐝 today to start his own apiary. The NUCs are small nucleus colonies made up of frames of bees & resources with a laying queen raised from queen cells — all from the club’s hives. The BoCC Apiary makes a limited number of NUCs each year to keep our colony numbers manageable while offering our (new) beekeepers NUCs at a reduced cost. Another benefit of membership to BoCC. 🍯🐝
