If you live near any Norway maple trees, you may notice leaves covered with brown spots and falling much too soon. Don’t be fooled — it’s not autumn yet.

Leanna Nugent, a certified arborist with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County, said the main reason why you are seeing them fall early is because of a fungus.

5 tips to keep Skaneateles Lake clean:
1. Skip lawn fertilizer: most of the time you don’t need it anyways!
2. Pump your septic system regularly (every 3-5 years).
3. Plant along your lake and streamside shorelines with native perennial plants.
4. Clean, drain, and dry your boat before entering the lake.
5. Plant a native meadow – you’ll be helping the water quality and pollinators!
