Michigan Fitness Foundation was founded in 1994 as a private charitable foundation to advance the policies and programs of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health, and Sports. The board of directors is comprised of residents who

play a vital role in the promotion of health, wellness, and physical activity throughout the state of Michigan. The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports was established through an executive order issued by Governor John M. The Council is comprised of representatives from across the state, appointed by the current governor to two-year terms. The Council’s vision is that the state and its communities embrace and support physical activity and health education.

What are some of your memories from your elementary school gym classes?

This image is of Mr. Keller from Longfellow Elementary School in Royal Oak. He was known for his military approach by teaching students the ropes, pull ups, chin ups, and the infamous 6-Inch Exercise (also known as the 6-inch leg hold) which is an isometric core move that targets the lower abs and hip flexors. And, he helped his students prepare for the Presidential Physical Fitness Test which was popular from 1950s to the early 2000s.
