Thank you to the Straub Family for your generous gift!

The Elk County Community Foundation is pleased to share the continued impact of the James and Gloria Straub Pinecrest Manor Activities Fund, established in memory of James and Gloria Straub. The fund provides ongoing support to Penn-Highlands Pinecrest Manor's Activities Department, helping deliver programs, experiences, and resources that promote residents' happiness, engagement, and overall well-being.

Gloria Straub volunteered at Pinecrest Manor, where she enjoyed spending time with residents and supporting the Activities Department. In honor of James and Gloria, their family established a fund at the Elk County Community Foundation to continue supporting something that was meaningful to Gloria during her lifetime.

Today, that legacy continues through funding for activities, equipment, and supplies that enrich the lives of Pinecrest Manor residents.

Recent purchases supported by the fund include games that provide opportunities for recreation, socialization, and group engagement; a stereo system for music-based activities; art supplies to encourage creativity; and fidget boards for sensory engagement. The fund also supported the purchase of a laptop, an iPad, and a protective case, allowing residents to stay connected with family and friends through video calls, messaging, and other forms of communication. For residents whose loved ones live farther away or can't visit often, these opportunities for connection can be especially meaningful.

Over 100 people gathered at Palmer Park for the Lois Orange Ducoeur Walk of Hope, raising more than $13,000 for local cancer care at Penn Highlands Mon Valley! đź’ś

This year’s walk expanded to support those affected by all types of cancer—celebrating survivors, honoring lost loved ones, and standing by those currently fighting. From breakfast and music to inspiring speakers and raffle baskets, the community came together to ensure no one in the Mon Valley faces cancer alone.

Thank you to all of our incredible volunteers, sponsors, donors, and participants for making a difference!

"Last night, our son was complaining of severe stomach pain. I took him to the Emergency Room at Penn Highlands State College.

After CT scans and talking to radiologists, our Cooper thankfully has nothing major wrong. As he was trying to get comfortable in the ER and in between sleeps, the sweet nurse brought in a Jared Box. I’ve heard of them but had no idea what to expect. This is literally the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen! And the handwritten letter of encouragement made my eyes tear up.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. ER & hospital visits are scary for any little one, this puts a big smile on their faces! Great job! “-Brittany Supko
