Our guest this morning was Jason Sullivan from the Salvation Army. Jason’s job is to give away all the money raised through bell ringing (officially called the Red Kettle Campaign) to those in need in our community. 🔔

Yes! The money raised in Dixon and Lee County stays here! Our Kiwanis club is in charge of organizing it, Jason distributes the money.

Through your donations, the Leydig Center, and United Way, Jason distributed nearly $15,000!!! 217 individuals were served, assisting 29 families.

So, when you see the red kettles out this year, give generously! If you want to donate now, checks made out to The Salvation Army may be mailed to:

Inspired by Ed replacing the Kiwanis sign by Mom’s Restaurant a few weeks ago, Anthony replaced the sign heading into Dixon on US-52 by Dixon Lawnmower Repair. Did you know there are (at least) 4 Kiwanis road signs welcoming people to Dixon?

Hey, Dixon, Illinois Rotary Club, it may be time to replace your sign too! Bring new nuts and bolts 😊

Today we learned from the Whiteside Area Career Center - CEO program’s director Grace Johnson and a current student! The WACC CEO class teaches students important lessons about starting and running a business and how to interact with people (“soft skills”). Many business leaders in Dixon and the Sauk Valley help these kids, including many Kiwanians! 😊

Another successful clean up of Lowell Park Road thanks to the volunteers from Kiwanis and the energetic helpers from Key Club!

While cleaning the road a gentleman pulled over and said, “what’s with all the safety vests up and down the road?” When I said we clean the road twice a year he light up and said, “that’s incredible! Thank you for the hard work!” 🚮 💪🏼

Make a difference in the world today and pick up some trash outside your home, work, church, or anywhere else! ☀️

Dixon High School’s Key Club is a dedicated group. This morning their leadership and some members shared the many activities they are up to in the coming weeks. Just listening to them made us tired!

We’re grateful for the work they do and for getting up even earlier than normal to share with us. ☀️ After their presentation Nancy went through Kiwanis International’s Safe Child Policy.

A joy filled meeting this morning as we recognized hardworking individuals and installed the next Kiwanis leaders. Even at these “serious” meetings the room is filled with laughter and smiles! 😁

Today we:
Recognized Heather Grobe as outgoing president and thanked her for her leadership. We also installed her as Treasurer!

Anthony Windau was given the Kiwanian of the Year Award and installed as vice-president.

A district leader recognized Rick Brantner and gave him the George F. Hixson Fellowship award on behalf of the club for his 20 years of heading up the Peach Day Fundraiser.

Nancy Hammit was reinstalled as club secretary!

And Julie Bunt was installed as Club President. Each past president passed the gavel around and gave words of encouragement and advice.

We also recognized an outgoing board member and affirmed the work of everyone else! We applauded, laughed, and smiled the whole meeting. Congrats, Dixon Kiwanians, on a great year. Here’s to the next! 🎉🥳

Did you know Township is so much more than road maintenance? 👨‍🔧

This morning Dixon Township Supervisor, Brent Reuter, shared the many things they do. Fun fact, there are 22 townships in Lee County and 1433 in Illinois!

In addition to caring for 40 miles of roads 🚗 Township also assesses property value 🏡 and provides assistance both general and emergency help to those in need!

Brent said the Township model of government is the “closest form of government to the people.” Thanks for sharing this morning! We had lots of questions and learned a lot!

Claudia is a natural storyteller with great enthusiasm! This morning she told us about the history of the Gem of Grand Detour— St. Peter’s Church. Built in 1850s this historic building has been renovated numerous times and while it doesn’t have an active congregation, the building is used for weddings, funerals, and an annual worship from St Luke’s Episcopal in Dixon.

Mark your calendar for the second Sunday of December as the annual Christmas at St Peter’s worship will be happening again.

Truly a gem of a place and Claudia is a gem too! 💎
