Veteran Companion Animal Services

Veteran Companion Animal Services Veteran Companion Animal Services (VCAS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization VCAS currently serves veterans and military families in central Ohio.

VCAS Mission – To enrich the lives of veterans, military families, and dogs through the many benefits of the human-animal bond. VCAS fulfills this mission through three programs:
Rescue Dog Placement Program: Many service men and women return home finding that their structure and purpose have been lost. Through the rescue dog placement program, VCAS returns this structure and purpose with the unc

onditional love of a dog. VCAS gets to know the veteran and matches them with a rescue dog that will fit their lifestyle and needs – creating a mutually beneficial relationship. VCAS covers the costs of all food, veterinary care, training and supplies for the first year. Frontline Dog Training Program: The Frontline Dog Training Program is a 7-week long training class taught by a professional dog trainer. These trainings are open and at no cost to all veterans and military families that currently own a dog. It may just sound like a simple step to prevent pulling on the leash, but our training program does so much more. As many veterans struggle with social isolation, group training allows veterans to connect with peers as well as VCAS volunteers. The classes focus on manners, working through experiences that dogs would be exposed to in their everyday lives, such as walking on a leash, sitting, staying and maintaining focus during distractions. Classes are held at VFW and American Legion post locations throughout central Ohio. Alumni Program: After a veteran receives a dog or attends a training class they are still a part of the VCAS family. The community events we host give veterans a chance to build lasting friendships and create an atmosphere to connect with other veterans and have fun. We use these opportunities to celebrate their contributions and as a check in to see how they are doing and how we can help.

Hi friends, Trike here 🐾 I was found as a stray in southern Ohio. I had injuries that led to the removal of one of my legs, but I've never let that slow me down. I've always been a happy-go-lucky guy who believes every day is a good day.

Recently, VCAS and Gigi's shared my story with David and Stella from Wapakoneta. David served five years in the Army, and before long, they decided I was the dog they had been waiting for.

Now I'm settling into my new home, enjoying plenty of love, attention, and new adventures with my family. I'd say we all got pretty lucky with this match. Here's to new beginnings, second chances, and all the good things still ahead ❤️🇺🇸

A huge thank you to American Legion Post 532 for hosting another session of our VCAS Ambassador Program Therapy Dog Preparation Class 🇺🇸🐾

We are so grateful to Linda Kender and Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dogs for sharing their expertise and helping our veterans and their canine companions build the skills needed to become successful therapy dog teams.

This class featured three incredible VCAS teams:
🐾 VCAS Veteran Jim and Lucky, who was adopted through VCAS from Gigi's
🐾 Tim and Remi, VCAS Training Program alumni
🐾 Eric and Baxter, VCAS Training Program alumni

These teams continue to demonstrate the powerful bond between veterans and rescue dogs while preparing to give back to their communities through therapy work. We are proud of all they have accomplished and excited to watch their journeys continue.

Hi, I'm Ferdinand... but my friends call me Ferdie. 🐾

I'm excited to share that I've found my new family with Coast Guard veteran Matt, his wife, and their teenage daughter❗ Matt served our country for three years and was hoping to find a retriever-type companion to share with his family. At about 2 years old and 53 pounds, I seem to fit the bill pretty well.

I'm a gentle, calm guy who enjoys nice walks and being close to my people. In fact, if I could spend all day right beside them, I would. ❤️

Thank you to Gigi's for helping me get my fresh start and for giving me the chance to find my perfect match. I can't wait to make memories with my new family❗

Before I go, I want to give a special thank you to the Zody Family, the Nickell Family, and the Falzone Family for opening their hearts and homes to me while we waited for my placement day. I am so grateful for the love, care, and support they gave me along the way.

For Craig Gearns, a United States Army veteran living with PTSD, anxiety, and depression, the bond he has formed with a dog named Cookie was life-changing.
