What a heart breaking loss. The entire community will miss you.

Well-known DeLandite Malcolm “Mac” Steen died Oct. 2 at home, with his wife, Kathy, and their two children, Rusty and Katie, at his side.

Steen had been diagnosed in August with a serious illness, and his condition declined rapidly, Kathy Steen said.

Steen, a former standout football player at the University of Florida, was known locally as a Rotarian, avid bicyclist and prolific grower of coontie fern. In July, he had summited the 4,170-foot Mount Wellington in Tasmania and, before his diagnosis, had been planning a bicycle tour of Italy with a group of friends.

Of all of his accomplishments, Kathy Steen said, he was most proud of helping change the lives of young people through his orthodontic practice, which he opened in DeLand in 1980.

Here are the latest Kepler / 44 plans, if you are just seeing this it’s been in the books for a few years now. Yes, lots of people fought against it, lots of people welcomed it. A Dunkin Doughnut and McDonald’s are now added to the mix- and of course the Publix center and mystery shops to come. Will the Convenience be worth the traffic? 🫣
