HOT AIR BALLOONS & WEATHER

Hot air balloons may make flying look simple and peaceful, but every flight begins with a very close look at the weather!

A hot air balloon rises when the burners heat the air inside the envelope, making it lighter than the cooler air surrounding it. Pilots can control whether the balloon climbs or descends, but balloons do not have a steering wheel. They travel with the wind.

By changing altitude, pilots can sometimes find winds moving in slightly different directions or at different speeds. This helps them guide the balloon’s flight path, but the weather ultimately determines where the balloon can safely go.

Here are some of the conditions pilots carefully watch:
🎈 Surface winds during inflation, takeoff, and landing
🎈 Wind speeds and directions at different altitudes
🎈 Wind gusts and sudden changes in direction
🎈 Wind shear and thermal activity
🎈 Nearby storms and their possible outflow winds
🎈 Rain, clouds, and visibility
🎈 Temperature and how it affects the balloon’s lifting ability
🎈 The availability of safe landing areas along the projected path

This is also why balloons generally fly shortly after sunrise or close to sunset. During these times, the atmosphere is usually cooler and more stable. As the sun heats the ground during the day, rising pockets of warm air called thermals can create unpredictable conditions.

Did you know aviation wind speeds are measured in knots? One knot equals approximately 1.15 mph. Most balloon pilots prefer to launch and fly in winds below 7 knots, which is about 8 mph. However, there is no single number that applies to every balloon or every flight.

Even when the sky is blue and the sun is shining, conditions may not be safe for ballooning. A beautiful day on the ground is not always a flyable day in the sky! ☀️🎈

A huge thank you to our volunteers, board members, pilots, food vendors, marketplace vendors, sponsors, and everyone who came out to support the festival. We couldn’t do it without you! 💙

We truly are thankful that we didn’t get the anticipated rain, however, the wind was just too much for the balloons.
Even more so, we’re thankful for all the vendors who still came out anyway, as the community did show up to enjoy the other elements of the festival.
Always risk with any outdoor event, but we’re so fortunate for what we were able to pull off.
Thank you… and mark your calendars for next year, Saturday August 7th!

We lasted as long as we could, but there’s a storm brewing! ⛈️

Our balloons were only able to do a candlestick glow at 7:00 PM and we’ve made the difficult decision to wrap up by 7:30 PM this evening.

Thank you to all who came out and supported our fundraiser, we hope you’ll mark August 7th on your calendar for next year’s festival! 💙

🚨 Evening Portion Festival Update 🚨

Please note that Evansport Road parking will not be available this year. All festival traffic should enter through our main entrance off of State Route 15.

Due to this evening’s weather conditions, balloon appearances are not guaranteed. The original plan was for the balloons to take flight at 7:00 PM, but if weather conditions allow, the pilots will instead try to inflate the balloons earlier in the evening.

Reminder: Tethered rides have been cancelled due to the weather, but the rest of the festival events are still a go as of now.

We’ll continue to share updates as conditions change. Thank you for your understanding and we hope to see you when gates open again at 5:00 PM! 🎈

Thank you to all who came out to the morning portion of the event! 🙌

Gates will re-open for the evening portion of the event at 5:00 PM.

We'll see you later! 🥳

We would like to give a friendly reminder that all hot air balloon events are weather dependent.

Before each balloon event, our balloon pilots meet to determine if weather conditions are safe for balloon inflation and flight.

The balloons were able to inflate for a short time this morning, but it was not safe to fly. We are hopeful that they will be able to inflate again this evening, but very specific weather conditions are required.

We apologize for any disappointment or misunderstanding. Unfortunately, this is the nature of an outdoor event, and the safety of our pilots, crew, volunteers, and attendees will always come first.
