The Preble Volunteer Fire Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of active Firefighter Terry Ashley on September 30, 2026. Terry proudly served our department for 32 years, and he will be missed by his brothers and sisters in the fire service and by the community he served.

Please keep his wife Theresa and the entire Ashley family in your thoughts and prayers.

Visitation is Monday, October 5, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home in Decatur, with a Volunteer Fireman's Memorial at 7:00 PM. Mass will be Tuesday, October 6, at 11:00 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.

We are very proud of our own Craig Lengerich for his accomplishment. We will never forget the 343 fellow firefighters lost that day.

In honor of the lives lost on September 11, 2001, we’re inviting our AF family to take part in our Honor the Fallen: Climb the Towers StairMaster Challenge.

This September marks a special milestone: the Preble Volunteer Fire Fighting Association is celebrating 75 years of service to our community.

Our department was formed in September of 1951, when a group of local volunteers came together to protect their neighbors and their homes. Ten years later, in 1961, we became a formally incorporated nonprofit, a step that helped shape the department we are today.

After seventy-five years, that same spirit of neighbors helping neighbors is still what drives us. Every member who has worn our badge, past and present, has given their time so our community stays safe.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way: our members, their families, and this community. Here's to 75 years, and to many more ahead.

The State of Indiana and the Indiana Volunteer Firefighter's Association - IVFA recently honored firefighters who have reached the incredible milestone of 50 years of service.

We are proud that they recognized our own, Warren Scheumann, for this outstanding achievement. Over the course of five decades, Warren has served Preble Fire Department in many roles, including Fire Chief, demonstrating unwavering dedication, leadership, and commitment to our community.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Warren for his 50 years of service and the lasting impact he has made on our department and those we serve.

On the morning of April 22, 2026, Preble Fire Department was dispatched to assist Decatur Fire Department on a reported house explosion that quickly escalated into a working structure fire.

Preble responded with manpower, Engine 408, and Cascade 441. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire involvement in the attached garage extending into the main portion of the home. Crews from Preble worked on scene for approximately 3 hours to help bring the incident under control.

We are grateful to report that no injuries occurred.

Great work by all departments involved in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion. A special thank you to Ossian Fire Dept and Bluffton Fire Territory for covering the Preble area while our crews were committed.

Strong teamwork keeps our communities safe. 🚒
