Paul Harris Fellows: The Rotary Club recognized five club members today for their contributions to the Rotary International Foundation as Paul Harris Fellows. Pictured left to right are Max Miller, recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow +1, Al Converset - Paul Harris Fellow +7, Barb Affolder – Paul Harris Fellow +2, Jim Compton – Paul Harris Fellow +3, and Mark Jahn – Paul Harris Fellow +4.

The Decatur Rotary Club has contributed nearly $60,000 overall to the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation, founded more than one-hundred years ago, helps to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty throughout the world. Projects that are funded through the foundation include Rotary’s work to eradicate Polio, helping to provide clean water for communities, funding youth exchanges, providing community grants and more.

The Decatur Club’s contributions have come back to the community recently in the form of grants to provide benches in the DeCATur alley, at Riverside pickleball courts, and at Kekionga Park, as well as bat and equipment cubbies at REV, and a climber at the Water Park on 5th Street, among other projects.

Foundation Chair Lynn Habegger is also pictured.

Rotary club learns every week
Speakers present a variety of topics at weekly Rotary club meetings. Recently, the Rotary Club heard from NCAA men’s basketball referee Steve Skiles, now retired from the NCAA and refereeing locally, Adams County Economic Development Corporation executive director Colton Bickel, and representatives from the Boys & Girls Club, Heath Moser, Julie Wheeler, and Ron Dull.

Skiles spoke about his career in refereeing, the preparation and competitiveness involved, and the satisfaction he has found and still finds in refereeing. He noted the need for referees and encouraged others to get their licenses to referee youth through high school especially.

Bickel reported that the ECEDC is now located on 2nd Street, and the building has a number of conference rooms which can be used. Additionally, Lounge 88 is a landing spot for any businessperson looking for a spot to work. Bickel introduced funds available for small businesses and other businesses within Adams County, efforts of the tourism director, training available, and the upcoming signing day.

Earlier this spring, the Rotary Club heard from representatives from the Boys & Girls Club of Adams County, including Heath Moser, CEO of the Adams County Club; Julie Wheeler, Unit Director of the Decatur location; and Ron Dull, a longtime board member and active participant on several Club subcommittees. The group provided a comprehensive update on current developments within the organization, highlighting the success of last summer’s learning program at Bellmont Schools. They also discussed countywide fundraising efforts that support the Club’s mission and shared future plans, including the potential reconstruction of the gym at the Decatur facility, underscoring their continued investment in expanding opportunities for youth across Adams County.

Pictured are Rotarian Greg Simmons with Bickel. The Rotary Club meets weekly on Thursdays for lunch at 2Brothers Restaurant in downtown Decatur.
