I love wearing my alumni shirt! 🦁 First off, you can’t tell me nothing when I put this Lion on. 😂

Then I’ll run into somebody from Westlake or another school:
“You went to MLK?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay, okay… we know about y’all.”

Yeah, I know y’all know about us! 😂 But let me show you what we’re doing NOW.

Our school has had challenges. And as alumni, we have an opportunity to show up, support our students, and help move things forward.

That’s what this shirt represents to me. When you see me wearing it out in the community, you’re seeing somebody who still cares. Somebody willing to come back, put in some work, and be part of the solution.

The shirt starts the conversation. What we do behind it gives it meaning.

Coming back to MLK, I’m still discovering meaningful ways our school is showing up for students and families. 🦁♥️

During my PTSA visit, Ms. Pam Johnson took time to walk me through the SAFE Center—Student and Family Engagement—and share a closer look at the support available within our school.

Seeing these spaces firsthand gave me a deeper appreciation for the people doing this work. Thank you, Ms. Johnson, for welcoming me and helping me learn more about what’s happening at KING 👏🏾

Fellow alumni, I encourage you to reconnect, ask questions, and find a way to contribute. Joining PTSA is one place to start. Our presence and participation matter.

Keeping Our Lions Safe & Supported 🦁🤍

I left our recent MLK PTSA meeting with a better understanding of how our school works to keep our Lions safe—and a deeper appreciation for Principal Evans taking the time to explain it 🦁🤍

Hearing her walk us through the three lockdown levels helped me understand what each one means and how families can support the school during those situations.

Here’s what I learned:

🔒 LEVEL 1 — Secure the exterior
Exterior doors are locked and the main entrance is monitored. Students and staff remain inside, with movement limited to the building.

🔒 LEVEL 2 — Secure classrooms
Exterior and classroom doors are secured. Students and staff remain in their rooms, and instruction may continue.

🔒 LEVEL 3 — Locks, Lights, Out of Sight
Doors are locked immediately. Everyone moves out of sight and remains silent. Lights are turned off when visibility allows.

Families should follow official school and district updates and avoid coming to campus during a lockdown until directed.

This is why I’m glad I joined the PTSA. Being in the room gave me a chance to learn, connect, and better understand how I can support our students.

Membership is only $15, and I encourage fellow alumni, parents, and community supporters to join. Contact the school’s PTSA for membership details.

25 years of Lion pride. Generations of possibility ahead. 🦁🎓

Since 2001, Martin Luther King Jr. High School has been part of our community’s story. As we celebrate this milestone, let’s keep the next chapter in mind: our students crossing that graduation stage, prepared for what comes next.

Every class attended, assignment completed, and word of encouragement helps move that vision forward.

Happy Homecoming to all the MLK alumni I got to see and catch up with last night 🦁🤍

One of the most special moments of my night at MLK’s homecoming happened right here ❤️🦁

In the middle is Miss Culberson, the mother of our late brother John Culberson, Class of 2006. John played trombone, loved FAMU, and had so much love for MLK and our Kings of Halftime. Our band family has honored him over the years, and he’s still part of us.

Tonight, I unexpectedly ran into his mother, and she told me she had something special of John’s that she wanted to give me. Man… that touched my heart. For her to think of me in connection with her son means more than I can explain.

Beside her in burgundy/crimson is my sister Ms. Tigner, another member of the !! She even hopped on the cymbals with the high school students tonight, had some fun, and showed them a few things. That’s the connection between generations I love seeing.

Thank you to my brother Nate for capturing this moment. With all the excitement of homecoming, this is one I’ll carry with me.

Miss Culberson, thank you for thinking of me and sharing that love. John, we miss you, brother. Your love for this band and this school is still remembered ❤️

Happy Homecoming, Lions! 🦁🏈

Yesterday, I officially joined my high school’s PTSA, and this one means a lot to me.

As an MLK alumnus and Alumni Association President, I’m excited to strengthen the connection between our alumni, parents, teachers, and students—and create more opportunities to support our school.

I’ll share more soon about the encouraging conversations and opportunities from our meeting. There’s work to do, and I’m grateful to be part of it.
