Help Them See Their Strengths, Especially When They Don’t

Many children only hear what they did wrong. Flip that narrative.

Ask: “What’s one thing you’re proud of this week?”

If they struggle to answer, gently remind them of small wins… “You were kind to your sister,” or “You tried again even when it was hard.”

How to start:

Create a “Proud Moments” jar, each week, write one moment they felt good about themselves. Read them together on Sundays.

Practice Listening to Understand, Not to Correct

Children often stop sharing when they feel unheard.

When your child talks, pause your urge to fix, interrupt, or teach. Just listen. Nod. Validate.

Try this:
• “That sounds really hard. Thank you for telling me.”
• “I understand you felt embarrassed. I’ve felt that way too.”

This kind of listening builds deep trust and emotional safety.

Teach Self-Kindness When Mistakes Happen

Children often mirror how we react to our own mistakes. If you get upset, show self-compassion out loud:

“I messed up dinner, but that’s okay, I’ll try again tomorrow.”

How to start:

When your child spills something or fails a test, model kindness: “Everyone makes mistakes. What can we learn from this?”

This helps them separate self-worth from performance and builds lasting self-esteem.

Create a Safe Emotional Space at Home

Children need a place where feelings are always welcome.

You can create a “Calm Corner”, a small area with pillows, books, sensory toys, or journals where they can breathe, draw, or talk it out.

How to start:

When they’re upset, guide them there and say, “Let’s take some time to feel and calm down together.”

Over time, they’ll associate emotions with safety, not punishment.

Model What Emotional Honesty Looks Like

Your child won’t learn emotional intelligence from lectures, they learn it from your example.

If you’re angry, say: “I’m feeling frustrated, so I’m going to take a few deep breaths.”

If you’re sad, share: “I feel sad today, but that’s okay. Feelings come and go.”

How to start:

Use “I feel” statements openly. This normalizes emotions and shows your child that it’s safe to feel, express, and calm down.

Build Confidence by Praising the Process, Not the Outcome

Many parents accidentally tie love to achievement. When you praise effort, your child learns they’re valuable even when things don’t go perfectly.

Instead of: “You’re so smart.”
Say: “I love how you kept trying even when it was hard.”

How to start:
At dinner, ask each child to share one thing they worked hard on today, not necessarily what they won at.

This teaches that growth matters more than perfection.

Help Your Child Name What They Feel Don’t Rush to Fix It

Children can’t manage emotions they can’t identify. When they’re upset, take a breath before responding and gently help them find words.

Try saying:
• “It sounds like you’re feeling frustrated because your toy broke.”
• “I can see your face looks sad. Do you feel hurt or disappointed?”

When parents slow down and name emotions, it helps children build emotional vocabulary and feel understood.

How to start:
Create a Feelings Chart at bedtime. Ask, “What emotions did you feel today?” Let them point, draw, or describe without judgment.

Reconnect Through Play

Play is how children process emotions safely.

Steps:

1. Join their world…play dolls, video games, or sports with them.
2. Let them lead; you follow.
3. Use play to open conversations gently.

Play heals what words can’t. Meet your child where they feel safe.

Build Self-Esteem Daily (Depression)

Depression attacks self-worth — combat it with daily affirmations.

Steps:

1. Speak life into your child: “You’re capable. You’re loved. You matter.”
2. Celebrate small victories.
3. Avoid comparing them to siblings or peers.

Model Emotional Regulation

Children learn emotional health by watching yours.

Steps:

1. Practice your own self-soothing out loud (“I’m taking deep breaths to calm down”).
2. Apologize if you lose patience, it teaches repair.
3. Show grace and forgiveness in real time.

Heal out loud so your child learns healing is human.

Involve Them in Their Healing Plan

Empower your child to take part in recovery.
Steps:

1. Ask what helps them feel calm or supported.
2. Let them choose between options (“Would you rather talk or draw?”).
3. Praise self-awareness and small wins.

Healing works best when it’s done with your child, not for them.
