There is a distinct moment in every KHS Music parent’s life where you realize this is no longer just an after-school activity. At first, it feels manageable—they just wanted to play an instrument or be with friends. Then suddenly, the family calendar is overtaken by Thursday rehearsals, missing uniforms, drill shoes, black socks, sheet music, or an instrument to drop off before the bus leaves. You find yourself picking up a kid from KHS who is either buzzing with adrenaline or staring blankly in total exhaustion. But somewhere in the middle of that chaos, we start to see it. We see why they love it. It is never just about the notes; it is the feeling of standing inside something much bigger than themselves. They realize their effort deeply matters to the person standing next to them—if they don't show up, a piece of the puzzle is missing. It is the sound of a chord locking into place after weeks of struggle. It is the chaotic bus ride home after the Big E or UConn’s Band Day. It is the inside jokes born from 10-hour days—like someone forgetting uniform pants, or decorating Todd Tree. It is a senior comforting a terrified freshman. It is Mr. Olsen saying, “One more time,” and watching the kids find energy for one more rep. It is the exact moment they realize they already belong. That is why they love it, and why we keep walking alongside them—even when the car smells like wet socks, fast food, and sunscreen, or when there are 47 urgent notifications on Remind or Email. Music builds kids in places we cannot always reach as parents. It teaches discipline, resilience, and teamwork without a single lecture. We see the confidence locking in and friendships cementing into lifelong bonds. Long after the final note of this 2025-2026 season rings out, they might forget the dark KHS parking lot. But they will forever remember how it felt. They will remember that they belonged to something extraordinary. And hopefully, they will remember that we were always there—right beside them. Because we always knew the truth: This was never just about the music.

🎶🚗 What an amazing day for KHS Music! 🚗🎶

Today’s Car Wash & Bottle/Can Drive was filled with hard work, laughter, teamwork, and incredible community support. We are so proud of our students and thankful for everyone who came out to help make this event such a success! 💙

From scrubbing cars and collecting donations to sharing smiles and making memories, today was a perfect reminder of what a strong and supportive community looks like.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, stopped by, honked in support, or simply cheered us on throughout the day. Your generosity helps support our students and keeps music thriving at KHS! 🎵

🚗🎶 Parent Volunteers Needed This Weekend! 🎶🚗

The KHS Music Department is hosting a fundraising Car Wash on Saturday, May 23 from 9:00 AM–1:00 PM, and we need a few more parent volunteers to help everything run smoothly. Parents can help with check‑in, handling donations, supervising students, and keeping things organized while our musicians wash cars and raise money for the program.

Volunteering: Standing Closer to What Matters,

Volunteering isn't just "helping out." It's choosing to stand a little closer to the moments that are shaping our kids.

It's not only about signing up for a shift, filling a spot on a spreadsheet, or answering one more late-night email. It's about:
• Seeing your child light up because they know you showed up for them
• Turning acquaintances on the bleachers into friends who feel like family
• Showing kids, by example, what it looks like to give your time for something that matters

The Invisible Scaffolding,

Volunteers are the invisible scaffolding around every performance, game, and event. We're there in the car rides, the early mornings, the late nights, holding space so our kids can take risks, fail safely, and try again.

We build community in the small, ordinary moments: sharing a joke over concession stand nachos, swapping stories while folding shirts, learning each other's kids' names.

What Volunteering Gives Back to Us,

And here's the thing we don't always say out loud: this isn't just good for the program—it's good for us. Volunteering gives us:
• Time with our kids that's focused, not distracted
• A way to use our skills for something bigger than our own to-do lists
• New friendships, confidence, and a sense of belonging we didn't know we were missing

Every Contribution Matters,

You don't have to be "all in" to make a real difference. Maybe your piece is:
• One game at the gate
• One tray of brownies
• One night helping sort uniforms
• One email you're willing to send so someone else doesn't have to

When more of us take one small piece, no one has to carry the whole load. The work gets lighter, the joy gets bigger, and the kids feel the strength of a community standing behind them.

Join us every second Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the choir room at the high school to get plugged in, meet other parents, and find a role that fits your schedule.
