We, at the Davis Phoenix Coalition, are aware of the recent event at Sonoma Valley High School in which Davis Community member Beth Bourne intensified her ongoing targeted harassment of LGBTQ+ students during a student protest. Following repeated provocation of students and refusal to heed official warnings regarding prohibited disruptive behavior, she was arrested—an outcome that serves as a direct, predictable, and necessary consequence of her conduct.
Such reprehensible actions reflect a broader pattern of anti-LGBTQ+ extremism that extends from national political rhetoric into local communities.
While we acknowledge and respect the right of every individual to free speech, our organization stands firm in upholding the fundamental dignity and humanity of all people. Honoring our core values demands that we take a decisive stance to safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly youth, against targeted harassment and harm.
We trust this action sends a clear message of accountability to all marginalized communities affected by bigotry, offering them reassurance and support. Although we sincerely hope this event fosters meaningful reflection and transformation among those who foster hostility and division, we recognize that significant effort lies ahead. We invite everyone to unite with us as we remain fully dedicated to preserving safe, inclusive spaces and standing with all who strive for a safer, more welcoming community.
