A Campus Connect Event in Collaboration with CDFW – Film Clips & Conversation: The Invisible Mammal

This event will feature exciting clips of this new documentary, we anticipate that the filmmaker will soon announce a full-length screening in Sacramento during Bat Week, October 24-31.

Join us for an engaging, in-person program featuring film clips and a dynamic conversation about The Invisible Mammal—a documentary exploring bats, biodiversity, and the beauty of the natural world. The session will be moderated by Madeline Drake, CNRA’s Deputy Secretary for Biodiversity and Habitat, and will include special guests Kristin Tieche (filmmaker), Katrina Smith (CDFW), and Corky Quirk (NorCal Bats). Join for all or part of the event, but we encourage you to participate in this amazing opportunity!

Who's ready for a fun morning out in nature?☀️🚗🥾🌾

We're inviting you, your friends, and family to explore the City of Davis Wetlands with Yolo Basin Foundation on Sunday, August 2nd from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM!

This tour is an auto tour with opportunities to get get out of your vehicles for one or two, short easy walks along the way. You'll get to take in fields of blooming sunflowers, watch massive flocks of red-winged blackbirds overhead, and if we're lucky, spot playful river otters hanging out in the water. 🌻🐦‍⬛🦦

It's completely free, family-friendly, and the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning outdoors!

Under the pavilion, you’ll get the chance to sit on some of the art! A set of 4 benches - one each for spring, summer, fall, and winter - introduce visitors to some of the flora and fauna they’ll see in the Yolo Basin in each season. Spot the iconic bats in the summer bench, a busy beaver in spring, a pied-billed grebe snacking in fall, and coot butt in winter. There are a total of 54 species depicted in these benches. How many can you see in the Yolo Basin during your visit?

You might notice clay sculptures mounted to the pillars of all of our activity stations. These ceramic plants and critters complement the activities at each station and encourage visitors to look closely at their surroundings, the way a naturalist would. Head past the wetland pond and you’ll find our Native Plants Mural. This mural highlights native plants important to the region and its people. The front face of the mural features red maids, a once-common flower grown as a crop by the Patwin Wintun peoples and celebrated with song and ceremony. While red maids are now rare in the Yolo Basin, their presence in this mural reminds us of the environmental and cultural impact of colonization in our area. The mural also features mugwort and an acorn sun. Along the other face of the mural, red-winged blackbirds fly through tule and cattails. The markings along the diagonal line evoke the basketweaving patterns these plants were often used for.
