Born in Harlem to Jamaican immigrant parents and raised in the South Bronx, Colin Powell became one of the most influential military and diplomatic leaders in American history.
A graduate of City College of New York, Powell entered the U.S. Army through ROTC and went on to a remarkable 35-year military career, rising to four-star general. He served as National Security Advisor, Commander of U.S. Army Forces Command, and, from 1989 to 1993, as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staffโ€”the highest-ranking military position in the Department of Defense. He oversaw 28 crises, including the invasion of Panama and Operation Desert Storm.
In 2001, Powell became the 65th U.S. Secretary of State, the first Black American to hold the position. He later received numerous military and civilian honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice, Congressional Gold Medal, Presidential Citizens Medal, Purple Heart, and the Silver Buffalo Award from the Boy Scouts of America.
Powell often credited Scouting with providing essential building blocks for his life, particularly the values of leadership, responsibility, and service.
In a 2017 letter to the TMR Alumni, General Powell fondly recalled his Scouting days, remembering hiking โ€œacross the George Washington Bridge and camping in some woods along the cliffs in Englewoodโ€ (Alpine Scout Camp).
While Powell was not a TMR camper, his Scouting story is an important part of the remarkable history of New York City Scouting.
From the South Bronx to the highest levels of the U.S. military and government, Colin Powell exemplified a life of leadership, service, and achievement.
