Being religious is protective against su***de for all young people—except for gay and le***an young people. A 2018 study in the Journal of Preventive Medicine found that young people who were questioning their sexuality and whose faith was important to them were nearly three times more likely to have recently attempted su***de than questioning youth for whom faith was not important.

As our Executive Director Matthew Vines highlights in his debate with David Bennett, that statistic is a glaring sign that the church’s teachings about gay people and gay relationships are causing serious harm.

Two verses in Leviticus are often cited to condemn same-sex relationships today.

But Christians have never lived under the Old Testament law, as the New Testament consistently teaches that Christ fulfilled the law. Moreover, the Levitical prohibitions of male same-sex relations were rooted in culturally specific, patriarchal gender roles that the New Testament points Christians beyond.

At The Reformation Project, our work is grounded in three core values: love for God, love for the Bible, and love for the church.

As Matthew Vines explains, reconsidering what the Bible teaches about same-sex relationships doesn't require abandoning orthodox Christian faith. The core of Christianity is the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection—not any particular view on same-sex marriage.

That doesn't mean these questions don't matter. It means we can engage them while remaining firmly rooted in Scripture, centered on Jesus, and committed to loving our neighbors as ourselves.

The biblical story of S***m and Gomorrah is not about same-sex relationships.

The threatened act in Genesis 19 was a horrific gang r**e, not a loving relationship. Ezekiel 16:49 identifies S***m's sin as arrogance and failure to help the poor and needy—not same-sex behavior. The word "so**my" wasn't even coined until the 11th century and never once appears in the Bible.
