Earlier this year, Dr. James (Jim) Brownson passed away at the age of 70, surrounded by his family.

Dr. Brownson was a New Testament professor at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, and the author of the seminal 2013 book "Bible, Gender, Sexuality: Reframing the Church's Debate on Same-Sex Relationships."

Jim was an early supporter and board member of The Reformation Project, and his contributions both to our work and the church overall were extraordinary.

In honour of his life and legacy, we invite you to join the livestream of his memorial service:

We are deeply grateful for this wonderful man, a fierce and brilliant advocate for gay, bisexual, and transgender Christians who we know has now been told, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

In the ancient world, same-sex behavior was widely understood as excess driven by out-of-control lust, not as an enduring or exclusive sexual orientation of a minority of people. That cultural assumption was based on the most prominent same-sex practices at the time, and it shaped attitudes toward same-sex behavior throughout the biblical world.

Understanding that historical context matters for faithfully interpreting and applying Scripture today—and for ensuring we do not wrongly condemn and exclude a whole group of people based on their sexual orientation.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, grandmas, adoptive moms, and spiritual moms! 💐

Today, we’re especially grateful for the moms in our community who dedicate their time and energy to helping people experience God's love for them.

Thank you for the many ways you show up for others, lead with love, and help build a more welcoming and supportive church for gay, bisexual, and transgender Christians. You are deeply appreciated today and every day. ❤️

As the conversation around Scripture and same-sex relationships continues, it’s worth taking a step back to consider how the discussion itself has evolved.

In this clip from his recent interview on The Bible for Normal People, Matthew Vines reflects on what’s changed between the original release of "God and the Gay Christian" in 2014 and the revised and expanded edition—including a shift away from focusing only on texts that directly refer to same-sex relations toward broader arguments about marriage and gender complementarity.

Today marks one year since the revised and expanded edition of "God and the Gay Christian" was released, and we continue to be grateful for the stories we hear of how it is changing hearts and minds.

A decade after its original publication, this updated edition brings fresh insight to the conversation by refining the argument, engaging key critiques, and incorporating new scholarship.

Its core message remains the same: that Christians can fully affirm the authority of Scripture while also affirming monogamous, covenantal same-sex relationships.

1 Corinthians 6:9 and 1 Timothy 1:10 are often used to argue that the Bible condemns “homosexuals,” but the relevant Greek terms are most likely describing exploitative sexual behavior, not loving or committed relationships.

Even though same-sex marriage didn’t exist in the biblical world, many of the countercultural principles the early Christians embraced regarding sexuality are consistent with same-sex marriages today: mutuality, monogamy, and covenantal love.
