🇺🇸 Another Post 15 Story Published on Legiontown!

They say it takes a village, and our American Legion Family continues to prove just how true that is!

We’re excited to share that another story about Gordon M. Crothers Post 15 has been published on The American Legion’s Legiontown website!

This time, the credit goes to our American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15, whose members coordinated our first-ever Trunk or Treat and took the time to write about its success. They just needed a little help getting their story submitted for publication, and we were happy to help!

That’s what being a Legion Family is all about. We each bring different skills, talents, and resources to the table, and when we work together, great things happen.

But there’s something else worth celebrating here. Our stories are being published and shared beyond our local community! People across the country can now read about the wonderful things our Legionnaires, Auxiliary, Sons of The American Legion, and community partners are accomplishing right here in Dade City.

Every event, every volunteer effort, and every act of service has a story worth telling. And we’re making sure those stories get told!

👏 Congratulations to Auxiliary Unit 15, and thank you to everyone who continues to make our American Legion Family something special!

We have been reaching out, are you answering?

🇺🇸 Be The One to reach out. Be The One to listen.

Not every Veteran who is struggling will ask for help.

Sometimes, it takes someone else to start the conversation. A phone call, a message, or an invitation to catch up can remind someone they aren't alone.

Check in on the Veterans in your life, even the ones who seem to be doing fine. Just knowing someone cares can make all the difference.

🏛️ **Preserving Our Past — A Legacy Project Update**

It's been a little while since we've shared an update on the Gordon M. Crothers Memorial Preservation Project, but that doesn't mean the work has stopped. Quite the opposite!

Over the past several months, we've been digging into historical newspapers, public records, photographs, and other documents to piece together the story of American Legion Post 15 and its historic home in downtown Dade City.

And we're finding that there's much more to this story than we originally realized.

📜 **Our Research Is Beginning to Take Shape**

We've started publishing our Historical Investigation Papers (HIPs) on our website. These papers bring together the evidence we've uncovered, explain what we've learned, and identify questions that still need answers.

One of our most interesting discoveries has been the story of our historic Post home. From the decision to build in 1921, to the laying of its cornerstone in 1927, and its dedication in 1928, we're uncovering the determination of the veterans and community members who made it possible.

A newspaper editorial from November 1927 captured their intentions beautifully:

*“They are erecting this building not only for themselves, but for public use.”*

Nearly a century later, that commitment to community remains part of who we are.

🔎 **Where Do We Go From Here?**

Our research continues. We're working to identify and preserve additional historical records, better understand the people who shaped the Post's early years, and document the role our organization and its historic home have played in Dade City's history.

We're also exploring opportunities to help preserve the building itself for future generations.

Most importantly, we're making our research available to the public. History shouldn't be locked away in a filing cabinet where no one can see it.

❤️ **This Is Our Community's History, Too**

The veterans who built our Post home nearly a century ago weren't simply constructing a meeting place. They were creating something they hoped would serve their fellow veterans and the Dade City community for generations to come.

Today, that building is still standing, and that commitment to service continues.

Our Legacy Project is about more than discovering what happened in the past. It's about documenting those stories, preserving the evidence behind them, and making sure future generations understand the people, sacrifices, and community spirit that made it all possible.

And there are still many stories waiting to be discovered.

If you have old photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, or memories connected to American Legion Post 15 or our historic building, we'd love to hear from you. Sometimes the smallest piece of information helps complete a much larger story.

🇺🇸🤔 FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Did You Know? The President’s Son Helped Create The American Legion!

Earlier this week, we celebrated the birthday of our 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt, and mentioned his son, Theodore Roosevelt Jr.

But just how important was Roosevelt Jr. to The American Legion? 👀

Well… he’s known as the “Father of The American Legion!” 🇺🇸

Following World War I, Roosevelt Jr. believed veterans needed an organization where they could continue their camaraderie, support one another, and serve their communities.

In February 1919, he brought together fellow officers in Paris, France, helping lay the groundwork for what would become The American Legion!

But here’s something you might not know…

🇺🇸 When veterans wanted him to lead the organization, he declined!

During the May 1919 St. Louis Caucus, fellow veterans called for Roosevelt Jr. to become their leader.

He declined permanent leadership because he didn’t want The American Legion to become associated with a political party or his family’s famous name.

He wanted the organization to belong to the veterans themselves.

❤️ Service Not Self.

Sound familiar, Auxiliary members? 😉

🇺🇸 But his story doesn’t end there!

During World War II, Roosevelt Jr. served as a Brigadier General in the United States Army.

On June 6, 1944, at the age of 56, he was among the first wave of Allied troops to storm the beaches of Normandy during D-Day!

Despite suffering from arthritis and walking with a cane, he personally landed on Utah Beach and helped direct troops under enemy fire.

For his extraordinary courage and leadership, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

The organization he helped establish would go on to inspire the creation of the American Legion Auxiliary later that same year in 1919.

More than a century later, the Legion Family continues that tradition of supporting veterans, military families, and our communities.

🇺🇸 One family’s legacy. Generations of service.

History has a way of bringing people together!

Gordon M. Crothers American Legion Post 15 would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Dade City Heritage and Cultural Museum, especially Joy, for taking the time to visit with us and share her knowledge of our community’s history.

As we continue our Gordon M. Crothers Memorial Preservation Project, we’re discovering just how much of our Post’s history is intertwined with the history of Dade City.

During our visit, we learned about historical records, early community documents, and other materials that may help us uncover more of our Post’s story. We’re especially excited about the possibility of discovering connections between some of Dade City’s early community leaders and the American Legion.

Our Post has been part of Dade City since 1919, and our historic home has stood since 1927. Every new connection helps us better understand and preserve that legacy for future generations.

Thank you, Joy, and the Dade City Heritage Museum, for helping us keep our community’s history alive. We look forward to working together and seeing what else we can discover!
