📚 On this episode of Antioch MFA’s LitCit, host Gina Rae Duran chats with acclaimed writer Bonnie Hearn Hill.

🎙️ They discuss her career, her writing and research process, and how she approaches storytelling through the exploration of the theme of misfits. Hill is the author of sixteen suspense novels, most recently the Kit Doyle Crime Blogger series and the novel The River Below. Her work also appears in The White Picket Fence, an anthology from Flower Song Press edited by host Gina Rae Duran.

✨ This week, our Mentor Monday Spotlight goes to one of our Poetry faculty members for the upcoming December Residency, Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo!

📚 Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo is the daughter of Mexican immigrants and the author of Posada: Offerings of Witness and Refuge (Sundress Publications 2016), a poetry collection inspired by her family’s immigration stories and her time volunteering with the humanitarian aid organization, No More Deaths. She was also chosen as the first “Poet in the Parks” resident at Gettysburg National Military Park in partnership with the Poetry Foundation and the National Parks Arts Foundation.

✍🏽 A former Steinbeck fellow and Poets & Writers California Writers Exchange poetry winner, Bermejo has received residencies with Hedgebrook and the Ragdale Foundation and is a member of the Miresa Collective. She is co-founder and director of Women Who Submit, a literary organization fighting for gender parity by empowering women and non-binary writers to submit work for publication. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles.

✨ This week, our Faculty Friday Spotlight goes to one of our Screenwriting faculty members for the upcoming December Residency, Joy Kecken!

🎬 Joy Kecken is a showrunner, producer and librettist, as well as a playwright and director, who has worked in television productions, films and documentaries, for over twenty years. She has written and directed for the critically acclaimed HBO series, *The Wire,* and recently finished an incredible season as an Executive Producer on Apple TV+’s *Swagger.* Her feature, *All-In*, is in development with Maven Pictures. She has also served as a Co-Executive Producer on Nat Geo’s *Genius* series for the *MLK/X* season, FX’s *Kindred* and Freeform’s *Motherland: Fort Salem.* She was a Consulting Producer on the feature documentary, *The Biggest Little Farm*, which got on the Oscar doc shortlist. Her additional writing credits include *Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, Tales* and *Homicide: Life on the Street.*

✨ This week, our Writer Wednesday Spotlight goes to one of our guests for the upcoming December Residency: Viet Thanh Nguyen, Special Guest in Creative Nonfiction!

📚 Viet Thanh Nguyen is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sympathizer, which also won the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, an Edgar Award for Best First Novel, the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature in Fiction. He is also the author of Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War, a finalist for the National Book Award in nonfiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and The Committed, the sequel to The Sympathizer. His other books include The Refugees and The Displaced: Refugee Writers on Refugee Lives. His most recent books are Simone, a children’s book illustrated by Minnie Phan, and To Save and to Destroy: Writing as an Other, from Harvard University Press in 2025. He is currently a Writer in Residence at USC, and his writing has appeared in The New York Times, Time, The Guardian, The Atlantic, and other venues.

✨ This week, our Mentor Monday Spotlight goes to one of our Poetry faculty members for the upcoming December Residency, Cathy Linh Che!

📚 Cathy Linh Che is a writer and multidisciplinary artist. She is the author of Becoming Ghost (Washington Square Press, 2025), a Finalist for the National Book Award, Split (Alice James Books), and co-author of the children’s book An Asian American A to Z: a Children’s Guide to Our History (Haymarket Books).

🎬 Her video installation Appocalips is an Open Call commission with The Shed NY, and her film We Were the Scenery won the Short Film Jury Award: Nonfiction at the Sundance Film Festival. She teaches as Core Faculty in Poetry at the low residency MFA program in Creative Writing at Antioch University in Los Angeles and works as Executive Director at Kundiman. She lives in New York City.

✨ This week, our Faculty Friday Spotlight goes to one of our Fiction faculty members for the upcoming December Residency, Natashia Deón!

📚 Natashia Deón is a two-time NAACP Image Award Nominee for Outstanding Literature, Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy Award Nominee in Fiction, a practicing criminal attorney, judge for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Fiction and Debut Fiction, and author of the critically acclaimed novels, Grace and The Perishing. Grace was named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times and awarded Best Debut Novel by the American Library Association's Black Caucus. A PEN America Fellow, Deón has also been awarded fellowships and residencies at Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Prague Summer Program for Writers, Dickinson House in Belgium, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She is a professor of creative writing at UCLA and Antioch University.
