The Southern California District Council of Laborers joins the labor movement in mourning the passing of Dolores Huerta, a pioneering labor leader, civil rights advocate, and co-founder of the United Farm Workers.

Dolores dedicated her life to fighting for the dignity, rights, and opportunities of working families and helped shape the American labor movement.

SCDCL values our longstanding relationship with the United Farm Workers and the solidarity we share across the labor movement. We have proudly stood alongside the UFW for years and will continue to support their efforts to protect the rights, dignity, and livelihoods of working families.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dolores Huerta’s family, loved ones, and our brothers and sisters at the UFW.

Her legacy lives on through the movement she helped build and the generations who continue that work.

Rest in Peace, Dolores Huerta.

Building the Future of Southern California’s Supply Chain.


Throughout this series, we’ve highlighted the skilled Laborers, infrastructure, and industries that keep goods moving across Southern California and throughout the nation. Now, we’re looking ahead to what it will take to strengthen and modernize that interconnected system for the next generation.


Southern California District Council of Laborers Business Manager Jon P. Preciado joined Supply Chain Federation CEO Tim Jemal and Port of Long Beach CEO Dr. Noel Hacegaba to discuss the future of goods movement, the need for continued investment in our industrial infrastructure, and the opportunities ahead for our skilled workforce.


From our ports and railways to our highways and industrial facilities, building a stronger supply chain requires collaboration between organized labor, industry, and public-sector partners.


SCDCL and LIUNA are proud to be part of that conversation and the partnership working to move Southern California forward, creating opportunities for our members while building the infrastructure our economy depends on.

LIUNA Local 1309 member Phan Prum’s story is featured in a new Los Angeles Business Journal op-ed, “Good Jobs Need Industrial Ground,” authored by our Southern California District Council of Laborers Business Manager Jon P. Preciado and Supply Chain Federation CEO Tim Jemal.

From the bridges and roads that connect our communities to the infrastructure supporting our ports and industrial economy, Phan’s 22-year career as a Laborer represents the opportunities that good union jobs create for working families.

VOTE NO ON PROP 45

Representing our members means showing up where decisions are made.

Across Southern California, our SCDCL organizers attend public meetings, engage with elected officials and participate in discussions about the projects that shape our communities.

From roads and bridges to major infrastructure projects, these decisions affect the work our members perform and the opportunities available to working families.

California’s Proposition 45 would change how certain projects are reviewed and approved, including placing limits on public comment periods and changing how project alternatives are considered. These are among the changes that have raised concerns about opportunities for workers and communities to participate in project decisions.

Our members build our communities. Their voices are part of the conversation.

LIUNA Local 1309 members came together at their union hall for a Laborers Rising Foundation Class focused on strengthening our Union through member education, involvement and organizing.

Tafadar “Taf” Sourov from LIUNA International’s Laborers Rising effort joined SCDCL Business Manager Jon P. Preciado, SCDCL organizers and representatives to connect with members about where our Union is going and the role every member can play in building solidarity, getting involved and growing LIUNA.

Laborers Rising is about reaching our members, strengthening their connection to their Local, SCDCL and LIUNA while giving them the tools to help build its future.

As opportunity continues to grow across New Mexico, LIUNA Local 16 is focused on making sure the next generation of workers is ready to build it.

Through programs like STAR, young people can get hands-on experience in the construction trades, develop real skills and discover a pathway to a career where they can earn while they learn, support a family and help build the communities they call home.

LIUNA Local 16 isn’t doing it alone. As part of the larger SCDCL and LIUNA family, they’re working alongside contractors, industry partners and community partners to invest in New Mexico’s skilled workforce and create opportunities that can last for generations.

LIUNA Local 1309 retiree Joe Carattini started as a Laborer, became a foreman at just 25 years old, and today serves as a superintendent with Griffith Company in a career that has provided for his family while giving him the opportunity to grow and lead in the industry.

And as Joe explains, being a Laborer is about much more than hard work. Laborers are often among the first on a project and the last to leave, bringing the skill, knowledge and experience needed to get the job done. 

After decades working on projects throughout Southern California, Joe has also seen how that work connects to something much larger: the ports, roads and infrastructure that allow goods to move through our region and across the country.

For Joe, knowing families, including his, depend on that infrastructure brings a real sense of pride to the work.

Through our continuing series with the Supply Chain Federation and The Port of Long Beach, we’re sharing the stories of the Laborers who build the infrastructure that keeps Southern California moving.
