Rest in power, Dolores Huerta

“Dolores Huerta was more than a labor leader. She was one of the greatest forces in our labor movement, dedicating her life to empowering working people and fighting for those whose voices were too often ignored by the rich and powerful. She was a movement all her own, with her endless courage inspiring countless workers to find their voices and rise up against injustices.

She stood on picket lines, led strikes and national boycotts, and confronted injustice head-on. Her drive and determination as trailblazer led her to co-found the United Farm Workers and helped secure the historic Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975, giving California farmworkers the right to organize and bargain collectively during a time in history when many unions didn’t prioritize the organizing of immigrant workers of color.

Her legacy lives through the generations of organizers and labor leaders she inspired. It's not an exaggeration to say that the courage of Dolores Huerta, opened doors for future generations of labor leaders of color that would have remained closed were it not for her commitment to dismantle institutional inequality. As a strong woman of color who never took no for an answer, she taught us that organizing is about empowering people to recognize their own strength, no matter the odds."

TEAMSTERS LOCAL 986 SHOP STEWARDS MEETING — BELLFLOWER, CA

Teamsters Local 986 recently held its monthly Shop Stewards Meeting at our Bellflower office, bringing members together for important updates on legislation and issues affecting working families across California.

Alyssa Goodstein, legislative director for Climate Jobs California, discussed Proposition 45 and the importance of voting NO, outlining concerns about its potential impact on union jobs, worker protections, environmental safeguards, and the ability of working people to have a voice in their communities.

Sam Cornejo, political director for Teamsters Joint Council 42, walked members through the legislative process in Sacramento and highlighted several Teamsters-backed bills recently signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

These included legislation addressing artificial intelligence and worker protections, the COMPETE Act (AB 1776), and SB 1371, which strengthens accountability for waste haulers during labor disputes.

Thank you to Alyssa and Sam for sharing their knowledge, and to all our Shop Stewards who attended.

An informed and engaged membership makes our Union stronger!
