GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
The Zonta Club of the Corry Area held its annual presentation of checks to nonprofits recently in the Corry City Park.
Also, following lunch with the 21st Century Girls, the club members presented a check to Kara Dahl, program coordinator; and Matt Platz, executive director, of the Corry Hi-Ed for the 21st Century Girls program, a four-day summer program for girls in seventh and eighth grades with aptitudes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) and business subject areas. The Zonta club is the only organization that provides financial sponsorship to the program.
The Zonta club created the In Memoriam donation to honor all past Zonta members, and it will be given to a worthy organization annually. It will be attributed in memory of a specific Zonta member if one has passed during that previous year. Otherwise, it is simply in memory of all previous Zonta members. This year, the club chose the Corry Historical Society in memory of Patsy Nichols, who was a founding member of the Zonta Club of the Corry Area in 1980 and who passed away on April 11 at the age of 88.
Also this year, the club donated $4,900 to local organizations, which includes an adult scholarship through the Corry Hi-Ed but does not include high school and college scholarships. The money is raised from the club’s annual car/cash raffle.
Checks were presented to the following organizations: Corry Hi-Ed Adult Scholarship, $1,000; Corry Public Library Children’s Program, $500; Love INC, $500; Safe Journey general fund, $500; Safe Journey Date Violence, $300; Hope Center Ministries, $500; Salvation Army Love in a Bag, $500; Corry Historical Society in memory of Patsy Nichols, $100; 21st Century Girls, $1,000.
“The Zonta Club of Corry is pleased to support these worthy and deserving organizations as they continue to make positive impacts within the community,” Zonta President Shirley Heitzenrater said.
The club also awards $1,000 scholarships to Corry High School seniors and/or college students each year.
