The NCMA joins the motorsports community in mourning the loss of legendary journalist Steve Waid. Waid, the 2019 recipient of the NASCAR Hall of Fame's Squier-Hall Award, began his career at the Martinsville (Va.) Bulletin before moving on to a decade-long run with the Roanoke (Va.) Times. In 1981, he jumped to Grand National Scene and became one of the most important voices in American motorsports for the next three decades.

Waid was the president of the National Motorsports Press Association for 12 years, won many annual and lifetime achievement awards, and co-authored a biography on Junior Johnson with another giant of American motorsports journalism, Tom Higgins.

Waid was 77 and is survived by his wife, Margaret; their children, Celeste and Andrew; and his brother, Dr. Lewis Randolph Waid of Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Legendary Night, indeed.

The 19th Annual North Carolina Motorsports Industry Awards, presented by Fifth Third Bank, were filled with emotion, laughter, and gratitude as the Old North State's racing industry gathered in Charlotte to pay tribute to some of the biggest and most influential names in American motorsports history.

🏆 Mario Andretti
🏆 The Petty Family
🏆 Venturini Motorsports
🏆 Dave Moody

As Mario Andretti said from the podium, "One of the greatest honors you can receive is to be recognized for your hard work." We agree, and it was our privilege to be in the presence of the honorees' collective greatness.

We also had the opportunity to recognize the next generation of industry professionals by awarding general scholarships from the North Carolina Motorsports Foundation to Isaac Donnell, Marshall McClain, and Raine Putzrath. We look forward to following your careers!

And of course, we will never forget the once-in-a-lifetime fireside chat that concluded the evening, with Mario Andretti and Richard Petty sharing stories and racing wisdom with host Kyle Petty and the live audience.

We would like to thank the sponsors that helped make the evening possible:

Fifth Third Bank
Xceldyne
Jostens
Charlotte Motor Speedway
North Wilkesboro Speedway
Hendrick Motorsports
Joe Gibbs Racing
Team Penske
TOYOTA RACING
NASCAR
NASCAR Hall of Fame
Wells Fargo
Scott Lewis Associates, Inc.

Stock Car Steel & Aluminum

And we're already looking forward to the 20th annual awards in 2027, when we will celebrate the NCMA's 25th anniversary.

"At its core, the nobility and the majesty of Memorial Day can be found in the story of ordinary Americans who become extraordinary for the most simple of reasons: They loved their country so deeply, so profoundly, that they were willing to give their lives to keep it safe and free."

We are heartbroken and devastated by the passing of Kyle Busch. Our deepest condolences go out to Kyle's wife, Samantha, his children, Brexton and Lennix, the entire Busch family, the men and women of Richard Childress Racing, his teammates, fellow competitors, and the fans of "Rowdy Nation." Kyle was a devoted husband and father, as well as a champion competitor, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.
