The NCMA joins the motorsports community in mourning the loss of legendary journalist Steve Waid. Waid, the 2019 recipient of the NASCAR Hall of Fame's Squier-Hall Award, began his career at the Martinsville (Va.) Bulletin before moving on to a decade-long run with the Roanoke (Va.) Times. In 1981, he jumped to Grand National Scene and became one of the most important voices in American motorsports for the next three decades.
Waid was the president of the National Motorsports Press Association for 12 years, won many annual and lifetime achievement awards, and co-authored a biography on Junior Johnson with another giant of American motorsports journalism, Tom Higgins.
Waid was 77 and is survived by his wife, Margaret; their children, Celeste and Andrew; and his brother, Dr. Lewis Randolph Waid of Mount Pleasant, S.C.
