At Airventure 2025, FAA announced the new MOSAIC rule. This rule overhauls the Sport Pilot rules to make them much more useful for recreational aviators. Sport Pilots will now be eligible to fly aircraft as large as the Cessna 182. Updated certification standards for light sport aircraft will make it easier to bring new technology to aircraft design, and positions light sport aircraft as a bridge between certified and experimental aircraft. This presentation will explore the new MOSAIC rule and what it means for recreational aviators.
Eric Heigis is a CFI, attorney, and member of EAA Chapter 7. He got his start in aviation through Chapter 7's Young Eagles program. Eric began his career in Washington, D.C., working for Members of Congress on the House and Senate Transportation committees. In his eight years on Capitol Hill he worked on three FAA Reauthorization Acts. The recent FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 paved the way for MOSAIC one year later. He also secured the inclusion of several pro-General Aviation reforms in that law. While in D.C. he served on the board of EAA Chapter 4 as Vice President and Young Eagles Coordinator. He now lives in Los Angeles and is an attorney at a Texas-based think tank. He holds degrees from American University and the Georgetown University Law Center.
