This is the new single by The Afters. They haven't had new music in a very long time, and I think this is such a fantastic way to start again. The lyrics are...

“I start checking mid-May. That’s been the pattern. That’s usually when it starts. The sun shines a lot and it’s warm outside. It’s time.

I look for one. Then two. And often I’ll look one day and there are a couple and the next day boom! There are several. All tightly wrapped. All ready to open little by little.

By May 31 they are fully open. So many. I take pictures every year. They are delicate. Small. So peaceful looking. So beautiful against their green leaves.

Every year I look at them and I see the hill where they came from. My heart hurts. Even still. And I think: maybe there was enough light when Brian was on that hill that very early morning and he saw them. I know he saw horror that morning. I hope he saw beauty, too. Just at that last moment. I hope his eyes closed to beauty. And I hope they opened up again to Beauty with a capital B.

I started checking this year mid-May. The bush is healthy, filled with several branches and green leaves. I have checked it every day since.

No buds.

Not one.

How I didn’t want to write this. How I hoped and prayed a bud would appear and I wouldn’t have to say “There are no roses this year.” Brian’s rose bush has bloomed every single year since 1999 - every single year except one. That was in 2020. It was healthy then as it is now. Green then as it is now. But even up to May 31, the date Brian died, there were no buds. No flowers.

The next day, June 1, 2020, dad died...Maybe having no buds or flowers that year was Brian’s way of telling us that something sad was coming...I don’t know if God allows such things. But that’s what happened.

I don’t know if that’s what’s happening this year.

Lord. Your will be done. On earth as it is in Heaven.”
