Join our team for Charlie's Challenge September 12th in Cuyahoga Valley National Park! This beautiful event is one co-founder Elizabeth and her daughter have loved participating in for the last two years. The 6-mile kids bike ride is a beautiful trip through the park on a nice Fall morning in honor of so many babies who are loved and missed. If you can find a way to join us or donate to support our ride, we would be grateful! Alive In My Heart is honored to have been selected as a recipient of funds from this year's Challenge. The more funds raised the more we have the opportunity to receive in support of our programming. One of the babies who inspired Alive In My Heart turns 10 tomorrow. Here is a reflection Jacob’s mom shared on the eve of his 10th birthday 💚

10 years tomorrow…a decade of motherhood, of loving Jacob, of missing him. Of being re-shaped by love and by grief and by prayer. Of being softened through knowing what truly matters and seeing with greater empathy the battles we all face in this life yet being strengthened in the knowledge that God draws nearer in times of struggle and there is no pit of despair so deep He can’t find us and lead us to His Peace.

I’ll never stop wishing I could hold my firstborn in my arms or know and celebrate who he would have grown to be on earth. Celebrating him feels abstract in a way that guts me to my core. Yet knowing the good we have been able to do in his memory, in big ways through Alive In My Heart and in smaller more every-day ways, fills my heart. Grief is so very different 10 years later. It has become a part of me in a way that can co-exist with love and with joy. I can largely choose when I have the space to re-visit the hard emotions. But at his birthday each year, especially the days leading up to it, my body and my brain know how wrong it all feels. I feel exhaustion, aching, irritability and anxiety that are undeniable. An uncontrollable reminder that a piece of me is forever missing. In a way it is a relief to be reminded that my love and my memories and my connection to the boy who made me a mom have not faded a bit through the years. And I have walked this road long enough now to know that the discomfort won’t consume me. I’m no longer afraid of it but can recognize it with a comforting familiarity.

Tomorrow I choose to celebrate my perfect red-headed boy and the feeling I felt when I held him. That “a-ha” moment of “THIS is what this kind of love feels like”. A love with depth and dimension I couldn’t grasp before laying eyes on my child. We’ll celebrate all he has taught us about love and caring for others and all his legacy has grown to be.
