Danielle was about to lose her housing, and she was seven months into a high-risk pregnancy.
That was what this mother of four was up against when she was connected to Home for Families’ Homelessness Prevention for Expectant Mothers (HPEM) program.
Danielle had experienced a sudden loss of income and fell behind on rent. When her landlord filed for eviction, she wasn’t sure how she and her kids could stay in their current housing.
Her HPEM case manager immediately contacted the landlord to halt the eviction, taking an enormous amount of stress off Danielle and her baby.
After ensuring that the family was securely housed, Danielle’s case manager helped her obtain SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, Title XX, and TANF benefits. HFF also stepped in to provide her kids with back-to-school supplies, a newborn baby basket and diapers, holiday gifts, groceries, cleaning supplies, and furniture through the Furniture Bank.
Danielle continued her prenatal care, delivering her 8-pound, 5-ounce baby boy at 40 weeks with no complications. She and her family now live in housing that she describes as truly affordable. Danielle graduated from nursing school in August with a nursing job lined up, and she says her new career will now allow her to comfortably cover her bills and provide for her children’s needs.
Danielle didn’t have to wait until she lost her housing to receive crucial resources for her family, and as a result she didn't have to endure extensive housing trauma or long shelter stays.
