Week One: Together We Pray

Paul's prayer life wasn't private—it was woven through his relationships with the people he loved. This week, we'll look at what it means to carry each other before God, and how prayer itself is one of the ways we stay together.

Local Church Spotlight! ⭐️

On Saturday, September 19, Bethel International United Methodist Church held its first pop-up farmers market in the church parking lot, creating a space for local women to share their handmade goods, connect with neighbors and earn income for their families.

The market grew out of Opportunities for Bethel Area Women, an initiative started by Alejandra Lopez in collaboration with CRIS Ohio (Community Refugee & Immigration Services). The idea began with a group of mostly Afghan women who meet nearly every Tuesday evening to make crafts, crochet items, jewelry and other handmade goods.

“They wanted some income to help their families,” Lopez explained. “And so the idea of the market started because of that. We wanted a place for them to be able to sell the stuff.”

The women had been searching for craft fairs and other opportunities to sell their work but found that small, accessible public markets were difficult to find. The pop-up market provided a simple way for them to share their talents while connecting with their neighbors.

The initiative also reflects the changing character of the Bethel Road community, which has become increasingly international in recent years. Organizers hope the market will strengthen connections among immigrant families, longtime residents and the broader Bethel community.

“We have a lot of immigrant neighbors who want to support them,” Lopez said.
Organizers also see the initiative as a way to help women feel connected to their new community while respecting the cultural and religious traditions that shape their lives. Many of the women work from home, and the program seeks to create meaningful opportunities for them to contribute and support their families.

“We’re trying to find positive ways to help them feel like they’re making a difference and being a part of their new life here,” said Aimee Brown, Director of Communications for Bethel International UMC.

With seven or eight women currently involved, organizers hope the group will continue to grow and that future pop-up markets can be held throughout the spring, summer and fall.

Not that God's promises of land, descendants, and blessing ever fully come to fruition in Genesis. But the story does reach an important culmination in Jacob and Esau — after twenty years of murderous anger, Esau forgives his brother.

Forgiveness may not be land or descendants, but it sure is a blessing. Join us this Sunday for a special ending as we wrap up this series.
