The Kansas City Research Center recently acquired the Marillac Ladies Auxiliary Collection which contains administrative records as well as scrapbooks and photo albums documenting life at the Boys' home and its later iteration, the Marillac Home and School. What was once a bustling group home, hosting hundreds of children over its six decades of operation, is now where the Old Westport Shopping Center is located in Kansas City, Missouri. The albums date back to 1897, when the Boys' home was founded and contains photos of the first class of boys to be admitted. Read more about life in this Kansas City orphanage for boys in the latest Missouri Times.

An afternoon of music so good it’s scary! This Halloween, SHSMO will close out the 2026 Music on Elm concert series with performances by hometown heroes The Onions and Adventure Hat. The Onions are John Gilbreth, Taylor Bacon, and Lou Nevins, obscure pop archivists, dusting off the bookshelf of neglected pop music gems, rearranged for your pleasure. Adventure Hat is a music collective whose members embrace their Americana roots while cultivating their own unique voices. Always eclectic, and sometimes electric.

Route 66 Roadtrip
Bonnie and Clyde apartment, Joplin, Missouri
-------
In 1933, infamous outlaws Bonnie and Clyde and their gang spent 13 days resting from their crime spree and rented this quaint garage apartment on Joplin's south side. What was intended to be a vacation ended up with the gang killing County Constable Wes Harryman and Joplin Police Officer Harry McGinnis as law enforcement attempted a raid. In their haste to escape, the gang left behind their camera and two rolls of film. The local newspaper, the Joplin Globe, developed the film and published the now-legendary photos of Bonnie holding Clyde at mock gunpoint and of Bonnie with her foot on a fender, pistol in her hand, and cigar in her mouth, plus several others.

A gifted wildlife artist, David Plank, also known as the Birdman of Salem, had a special passion for painting birds in watercolor. His goal was never simply to create a beautiful picture, but to capture the spirit of each bird and convey the emotion he experienced. His work has been featured in numerous magazines and books and won many awards and recognitions. Through every painting, he offered viewers his own heartfelt interpretation of the natural world, bringing its beauty, grace, and wonder to life with remarkable talent and patience.
-------
David Plank passed away on August 12, 2026. SHSMO has about 200 of his paintings in our collection, some recently donated by the artist. Image: "Baltimore Orioles Pair" by David Plank, 1993, watercolor on paper.

The Missouri traveling Tuberculosis Exhibit Car traveled the state in the 1900s and 1910s on the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad as well as the Cotton Belt railroad. The exhibit car was a part of a public health movement aimed to educate the public on causes and symptoms of Tuberculosis and potential cures. It made stops in St. Louis, Columbia, Warrensburg, El Dorado Springs, Rocheport, Windsor and more Missouri cities. In 1905, 13% of deaths in Kansas City, Missouri were from TB. At the time, a diagnosis of Tuberculosis was usually fatal since there was no cure. The only sanitarium in the state of Missouri that helped treat patients with Tuberculosis was located in Mt. Vernon. In 1915 a hospital dedicated to treating tuberculosis patients opened in Kansas City, Missouri.
