Worship every Sunday 5-7pm at Hope Lutheran Church and Student Center! "and what does the Lord requir Our faith is not something static.

As life goes on, we are continuously walking as part of our faith journey, with God at our side. We invite the University of Maryland community to go on this humble walk with God together, knowing that we might be in different places, we are imperfect and mess up, and we don't know everything there is to know. Sundays: Worship and free dinner, 5-7 pm at Hope Lutheran Church (1420 Guilford Drive, behinds Commons 7)

Week Three Europe Trip Roundup!

The final week of travel for The Humble Walk was a week spent traveling along El Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage route across Spain. It was a chance for students to join generations of pilgrims since the 9th century hiking along the different routes to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

Each day was spent alongside one another while walking, reading scripture, being in silence, playing games, and sharing meals. Students reflected on the time spent in conversation with one another and others on the route. Lots of rounds of 20 questions and lots of deep meaningful conversations, too (not that 20 questions isn’t meaningful!)

They reached the cathedral and shared a sigh of relief and accomplishment with one another. What a feat! Week Two Europe Trip Roundup!

The second week of travel for The Humble Walk started with travel from Geneva to Taize, France where students would stay for the week. Taize is a monastic community rooted in a unique form of prayer that includes repetitive songs and times of silence. People from all over the world pilgrimage to Taize to experience simple living, spirituality, and community.

The Humble Walk has gone to Taize on every Europe Trip since 2017, and it’s a joy to see how that experience impacts each traveler differently. In the blog, you can learn about what life day-to-day looks like, the different jobs that people are assigned, and of course, what meals look like in a monastic community.

Most importantly, you can hear from the students themselves how this experience is moving and challenging them. How it inspires reflection, open-mindedness, and curiosity. Read about friendships being built with people from all over the world.

Week One Europe Trip Roundup✈️

The Humble Walk has been traveling across Europe over the past week. The first stop was Munich where Humble Walkers were welcomed by local college students and Pr. Roger, a friend we met all the way back on the first HW Trip in 2017. They then traveled around the city, visiting churches, a museum, and Dachau concentration camp. Students acknowledged the importance of remembering the Holocaust. One student reflected, “The greater lesson of the Holocaust is a warning that any society with enough unrest can commit great evils.”

While in Munich, students got to experience the beautiful nature in Bavaria by hiking (with cows!) and visiting the English Garden, a very large park with a river running through it. The gorgeous nature continued as the group traveled to Geneva where they hopped into Lake Geneva. Luckily, the water was warmer than they anticipated!

Equally as exciting, they learned about the important work of the Lutheran World Federation and the World Council of Churches. After days of learning and swimming, students returned to their host families where they received wonderful hospitality!

This May and June, The Humble is traveling across Europe with a focus on accompaniment, presence, community living, and relationship building. From living with students in Munich and sharing homes with families in Geneva, to communal prayer in Taizé and walking 20km a day together on the Camino de Santiago in Spain—this trip is all about walking together, both literally and figuratively.

We want to bring you along with us! Keep an eye on our feed and stories for regular updates, snippets, and photos from our group.

A couple of weekends ago, some of us from The Humble Walk headed to Mar-Lu-Ridge in Jefferson, MD, for a weekend spent completely unplugged. It was a beautiful time spent in nature and for renewal, rest, and time in community. We returned feeling refreshed and grateful for the intentional time spent reconnecting with one another in such a serene setting.

A story from one of our graduates to wrap up the school year!

𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭

When Andrew Jin arrived at UMD, he was looking for spiritual guidance and found community with Episcopal Terps, a campus ministry that has since closed. After its closing, someone suggested Andrew check out The Humble Walk– the now home for Episcopal Terps– for the weekly dinner and worship. He was curious, but hesitant. “I felt guilty for doing that,” he said. “Why would I go there and get free food without giving anything in return?”

One night, Andrew showed up to help unpack food and heard the worship band needed a guitarist. Using an acoustic guitar Pastor Ray had on hand, Andrew joined the group for one song— the creed to the tune of “Come, Thou Fount.” Andrew had never played in a consistent band before, but the warm and excited response from other students caught him off guard as they invited him to join the band. That moment stayed with him. “I felt welcome there,” he shared, “and there was something for me to do other than just getting free food.”

From sharing his musical gifts in the band to offering his time and labor on our spring break accompaniment trip to help restore North Carolina’s Lutherock outdoor ministry after the hurricanes, Andrew’s service mindset persists. “I’ve always liked the idea of doing volunteer work for the benefit of others,” he said. He added, “When you consistently refuse aid to those who are less fortunate, it's morally equivalent to refusing aid to Jesus in his time of need. And that's something that I believe very firmly.”

In Humble Walk, Andrew found a community where his gifts are needed and valued and he can serve alongside others. “Being a part of campus ministry is like having an island to be on as your refuge through the storms of the sea. And I guess that's not just a metaphor for being lost in a giant campus,” he says considering the 40,000 undergrads at UMD. “but also spiritual guidance.”

Because of your support, students like Andrew are discovering purpose, offering their gifts through service, and becoming part of a faith community. Thank you!
