Teachers! Join a free professional learning session from NCEE and the Library of Congress that explores an arts-based approach to teaching history in secondary classrooms. You’ll get a first look at Gaze: Portraiture and the African Diaspora and an opportunity to explore all seven Project-Based Learning units. In each, art and other creative practices (examples are: portraiture, street art, music, food, poetry, graphic narrative, and small business management) become portals for understanding history, culture, and a sense of self.

As the series’ introductory unit, Gaze models this approach. Students analyze portraits from the Library of Congress to explore how individuals and communities in the African diaspora have used portraiture to shape how they are seen and to record their lives for posterity. They examine how Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth self-fashioned their own images and how W. E. B. Du Bois curated a collective portrait of Black America. They also study how Arturo Schomburg preserved Black history during the Harlem Renaissance, and how contemporary artist Bisa Butler reimagines historical images today. Students then follow the process of visual artist Sam Singh to create their own portraits that reimagine a historical figure or document a community of their choosing.

NHD teacher Amie Dryer and her students spent the 2025-2026 school year researching the lives and services of Marine Corps Veterans Corporal Ruth Daria Franz Hummel and Private Paul F. W. Hummel in World War II. Hear more about how Ms. Dryer and her students discovered the relationship between the Hummels with primary sources and historical research! Today is also Ruth Hummel’s birthday!
