UMD Mayuri The University of Maryland's premier Indian classical dance competition

The University of Maryland proudly presents its very own intercollegiate Indian classical dance competition - MAYURI! On March 9th, 2013, the Mayuri Executive Board hosted its first premier Indian classical dance competition. With more opportunities to showcase the seven unique classical dance forms of India, Mayuri hopes to expand the interest for Indian classical dance and provide teams with a v

enue to flourish, learn, and compete as dancers, artists, and students. We hope to bring back the magic in 2018 for the 12th year of Mayuri!

“Mayuri,” literally meaning peacock, is a recurring symbol within Hindu art and scriptures as well as the national bird of India. Resembling grace, pride, and beauty, it is frequently depicted in Indian classical dance forms, and the dancer emulates the refinement of one of nature’s greatest creatures. The dancer illustrates the elegance of the peacock through hand gestures, foot positions, and facial expressions.
