🐾 October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. 🐾
Let's talk about shelter dogs for a minute. ❤️
A shelter is a safe place, but it isn't a home. Even with the best care, shelter life can be incredibly stressful for a dog. Unfamiliar sounds, barking, new faces, different routines, and the uncertainty of it all can take a toll. Some dogs shut down. Some become overly excited. Others struggle to show us who they really are.
And sometimes, the dog you see behind the kennel door is not the dog you'll see curled up on your couch.
At Macomb County Animal Control, we are incredibly proud to maintain a 95% save rate. But behind that number are real lives. Animals reunited with their families, second chances through adoption, lifesaving rescue partnerships, and countless hours of dedication from our staff and volunteers.
It means approximately 95 out of every 100 animals with a recorded outcome leave our shelter alive. That's something we're proud of, and something our entire team works hard for every single day.
But saving lives is about so much more than providing food, water, and a safe place to sleep. It's about giving every animal in our care the opportunity to feel safe, build trust, experience kindness, and thrive while they wait for their next chapter.
Because it's not just about saving their lives. It's about making their lives better while they're here. 🐾❤️
Through our Dogs Playing for Life program, our dogs have opportunities to socialize with each other, play, burn off energy, and simply BE DOGS! Our dedicated staff and volunteers work hard to provide enrichment, exercise, companionship, and love while these animals wait for their next chapter.
But here's the thing. As much as we love them, we don't want them to stay with us. We want them HOME.
We also know that pet ownership isn't always easy. Life happens. Circumstances change. If you're struggling with your pet, please reach out. We want to help connect you with available resources, guidance, and support whenever possible. Sometimes a little help can make all the difference in keeping a pet with the family they already love.
And if you've never visited our shelter, consider this your invitation!
Come walk through our kennels. Meet our dogs. Talk to our staff and volunteers. Learn about what we do. You might just meet someone you didn't even know you were missing.
This October, we encourage you to look beyond the kennel door. Give the shy dog a chance. Meet the energetic one outside of their kennel. Ask about the dog who's been waiting a little longer.
Because behind every kennel door is a life worth saving, a personality worth knowing, and a dog who deserves to be someone's everything. 🩷
P.S. Meet Nala. 🐾
Nala is 10 years young and found herself in our care when her mom was no longer able to care for her. At an age when she should be enjoying her golden years in the comfort of a home, she's adjusting to life in a shelter.
She's a sweet senior girl who would love nothing more than a soft place to land and someone to call her own again.
Nala is available for adoption, and we'd love nothing more than to see her go home. Maybe that's with you. ❤️
