Today Is All Saints' Day! A Celebration Nearly 1,400 Years in the Making!
Today, November 1, we celebrate All Saints' Day, a special day in the Catholic Church when we honor all the saints in Heaven, both those we know by name and the countless others known only to God.
But how did All Saints' Day begin?
The tradition goes back to the early Church, when Christians honored those who gave their lives for their faith.
In the year 609 or 610, Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome to the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the martyrs.
Later, in the eighth century, Pope Gregory III established November 1 as a day to honor all the saints. By the ninth century, Pope Gregory IV helped spread the celebration throughout the Church.
What does today's Gospel teach us?
In Matthew 5:1-12, Jesus shares the Beatitudes, reminding us that those who are humble, merciful, peaceful, and pure of heart are truly blessed.
The saints weren't all famous people who performed great miracles. Many were ordinary men and women who lived their faith through kindness, sacrifice, prayer, and service to others.
That's a lesson we can all take to heart.
As Knights of Columbus, we strive to follow their example through charity, unity, fraternity, and our love for God and neighbor.
Sainthood isn't just something we admire. It's something we're all called to strive for.
May the saints inspire us to be better Christians, better neighbors, and better servants of God.
Happy All Saints' Day!
