📰 HOT OFF THE PRESS

In April an election for a power utility board in Arizona was won by a majority of candidates running on a green energy slate. Our Distinguished Senior Fellow Marjorie Kelly and our VP Research & Policy Thomas Hanna have written about the movement for democratic control of our utilities for In These Times.

"Efforts like this are part of a growing international paradigm and movement called Democratic Public Ownership (DPO) — which The Democracy Collaborative has helped develop and popularize over the past several years." Marjorie Kelly & Thomas M. Hanna

The much awaited UK version of our is now out, but the news is far from cheerful. Our extensive dataset shows that the British economy is plummeting and lacking resilience to future shocks.

The UK Index of Systemic Trends is a dashboard charting the health of Britain's political economy across indicators including economic growth, inequality, poverty, financialization, life expectancy, productivity, environmental degradation and trust in government. It clearly shows that, across all UK nations, the economy is failing on all metrics and establishment political parties have continuously come up with inadequate responses to the crises.

"The UK Index of Systemic Trends gathers in one place the data in support of a radically disruptive contention—that Britain is not ungovernable but misgoverned, based on the attachment of the political class to a half-century-old economic model that serves the few at the expense of the many. Use this Index to measure the actual commitments of politicians promising to do things differently.” Joe Guinan, The Democracy Collaborative President

The Index of Systemic Trends quantifies, tracks, and visualizes key crises to show the need to move towards a new system to produce better outcomes.

"Municipally owned groceries are emerging as an innovative way to create greater food justice." - Marjorie Kelly & Anthony Cook

When the Bohemian Cooperatives said they wanted to launch a strategy for Bohemian Football Club, they did not have to ask twice for our support.

In the face of a multitude of global crises that make imagining a better, more democratic economy an ever-more-difficult exercise, the Bohemian Cooperatives are playing an important and catalytic role in modelling what a better Dublin - and a better society - can look like.

Here's a snippet of an upcoming documentary on this Irish CWB project.
