Dr. Romeo Guzman opened up his talk on the international game of fútbol, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the cultural significance of soccer; Claremont Craft Ales was packed to the brim! In true CGU style, Dr. Guzman opened a dialogue with the audience at the end of his lecture, inviting attendees to play on the field with him.

The 7C Psychology Conference, organized by a psychology honor society chapter at Claremont Graduate University, drew about 40 presenters and roughly 150 RSVPs to McKenna Auditorium. That is more than triple the previous year.

Students from CGU, Claremont McKenna College, Pomona, Pitzer, and Scripps presented across two poster sessions and two oral and data blitz sessions. Professor Wei-Chin Wong delivered the keynote. Four awards totaling $750 recognized top presenters.

Faculty from multiple campuses attended alongside students, which is the part worth noting. Cross-campus research culture does not happen on its own.

Jennifer Walsh, a double alum of Claremont Graduate University’s School of Social Science, Policy & Evaluation, recently became the 13th president of William Peace University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Walsh is one of a growing number of women stepping into presidencies at institutions across the country, and her path from CGU doctoral student to university president offers a revealing window into what graduate education produces.

“CGU was one of the few institutions that truly encouraged interdisciplinarity,” she said. “I had faculty from across the Claremont consortium, and I was able to structure my doctoral coursework in a way that brought together government, economics, international relations, public administration, political theory, and law.”

Her CGU dissertation focused on prosecutorial and judicial discretion within California’s Three Strikes law, a subject at the intersection of criminal justice, constitutional law, and public policy.

“Studying policymaking in the American context gave me a deep appreciation for the idea that systems are designed by people, and therefore can be redesigned by people,” she said. “We are not passive observers of institutions. We have agency. We can build something better, more effective, and more just.”

Before William Peace, Walsh held leadership roles at Azusa Pacific and Hawai’i Pacific University, where she launched thirty new degree programs in high-demand fields. “It has always been about student success,” she said. “I have been drawn to institutions where students come first and education is understood as a pathway to opportunity. That is what I valued at CGU, and it is what I cherish at Peace today.”

Drawing from Emily Wilson's recent Odyssey translation, Christopher Nolan's recent film debut invites us to reconsider how stories last the test of time, what it takes to create a film whose story spans a decade, and what the tale means for a modern audience.

Paul Jacques, Claremont Graduate University English PhD alumnus, unpacks the poem through the lens of a literary scholar and a movie lover. For lovers of historic literature, the Odyssey is a familiar, canonical text. However, the film invites new audiences to this ancient Homeric epic. What is Hollywood getting right about this myth, and what have they failed to capture?

Where did soccer come from? With the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming to a close, Professor Romeo Guzman breaks down where football came from, how it began as a tool of empire, and yet has turned into a global phenomenon.

For soccer fans in the United States and Football fans around the world, the game has developed unique takes and regional differences. On full display during the World Cup, understanding the heart of the game changes how we approach the final match.
