New class alert! Identification & Harvesting Using Traditional Ecological Knowledge is designed for nature lovers and enthusiastic learners alike, offering an introduction to the amazing California native plants growing right around us. Led by Seth Johnson, an enrolled member of the Gabrieleño San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians (), the class will open with an engaging group discussion covering key Southern California plant species. Honoring the ecosystem is central to our time together, so Seth will share Traditional Ecological Knowledge and teach ethical gathering protocols that ensure sustainable, respectful foraging. Next, we’ll step outside for a guided walk through the gardens. You’ll practice spot-on plant identification, observe growth habits, and discuss proper gathering techniques. To round out the experience, we’ll gather discuss recipes that you can take home to try in your own garden.

There is so much conservation work that happens behind the scenes at CalBG, but the Living Collection itself is also an important conservation tool!🌿

Some rare plant species cannot be traditionally seed banked (these are called “exceptional”), so the best way to protect them is to maintain genetically diverse plantings in conservation groves.

Our conservation staff make collections, nursery staff process the collections, and horticulture staff plant and maintain the groves on our grounds. Together, CalBG teams safeguard rare and exceptional native plants for the future.

To support this vital work, visit the Conservation Fund: http://onecau.se/_m36ry1! Limited edition gifts available for supporters.
