With some cooler days in store, it's the perfect weekend to set aside some time to spend with the remaining spring blooms in the California Plant Communities, as we begin the transition to summer. Come and commune with the Woolly Bluecurls (Trichostema lanatum), Matilija Poppies (Romneya coulteri), and Showy Penstemon (Penstemon spectabilis), and watch as the buckwheats and other summer blooms begin to show off. Don't forget that you can also enjoy the late evening light - the Garden is open until 8 PM through August!

Buckwheat blooms are bursting out across California Botanic Garden and we (and the pollinators) are here for it! We'll be featuring some of our state's many fabulous Buckwheat (Eriogonum) species this month, starting with the showy St. Catherine's Lace (Eriogonum giganteum). Native to the Channel Islands, this shrub also does well in landscaping in many areas of Southern California, with lovely grey-green foliage crowned by tall stalks of pinkish-white flowers. Its flowers, foliage, and seeds support bees, butterflies, and small mammals and it can host around 10 species of butterfly and moth. As the summer season passes, watch the lighter colored blooms change color to a stunning rusty red. At CalBG you can find St. Catherine's Lace in many areas including large patches in the California Plant Communities.

There's a beautiful weekend in store in Southern California and CalBG bursting with life, including the hundreds of bees enjoying flowering Toyon bushes across our 86 acres. This iconic native shrub is best known for it's bright red berries in the fall and winter, but it's just as lush and lovely in the spring/summer as it bursts into bloom with large clusters of tiny white flowers. In addition to the spring blooms, don't miss out on:
