Rika is an environmental and policy advocate with Beyond Pesticides, leading the Parks for a Sustainable Future initiative to help cities and schools eliminate synthetic pesticides and fertilizers and adopt organic land care.

Through this two-year pilot program, Rika helps cities from coast to coast transition public parks to fully organic management. Beyond Pesticides connects this work to climate impact directly: eliminating fossil-fuel-intensive synthetic fertilizers and pesticides which not only protects public health and the environment, but allows organically managed soils in parks and athletic fields to function as net carbon sinks.

She joins LA Climate Reality to show that decarbonizing our landscapes starts with the soil beneath our parks and fields.

Join LA Climate Reality for our August chapter call this Sunday, August 30, at 7 PM PT, featuring a discussion with Tina Orduno Calderon about indigenous perspectives on culture and climate, and her path to bring together environmental, educational, and cultural work.

Tina Orduno Calderon is a Culture Bearer and land and water protector of Gabrielino Tongva, Chumash, Yoeme and Chicana descent. Tina is a singer / Song Keeper, poet and storyteller and has composed over two dozen songs in her ancestral languages of Tongvé and Chumash.

Tina is a frequent public speaker, working closely with many environmental organizations and schools to give voice to the lands, waters and sacred elements and to encourage others to be good relatives.

Jessica is an accomplished environmental steward with over 20 years of experience driving innovation in the waste industry. Her well-rounded career, having held direct roles as a consultant and within municipal government, environmental nonprofits, and a private hauling company, gives her a unique, systems-level perspective. As the Director of Sustainability and Zero Waste at Athens Services, she leads innovative programs focused on legislative compliance, food recovery, outreach, and complex diversion strategies.

Jessica has earned national recognition, including the 2021 International Women in Sustainability Leadership Award and Waste360’s 40-Under-40. She formerly hosted/produced the award-winning EcoJustice Radio (aired on KPFK and KPFT) and was a professor of Recycling & Resource Management at Santa Monica College. She is a Southern District board representative for California Resource and Recovery Association and a founding coalition member of ReusableLA.

In her free time, Jessica channels her creativity into poetry and making art from discarded materials.

Our Los Angeles Climate Reality Project June chapter meeting features an interview with Aaron Kreisberg of Catalina Island Conservancy, a non-profit land trust that stewards Catalina Island’s natural resources through conservation, education, and recreation. The Conservancy is working to defend the island from catastrophic wildfire, protect the island’s soil, re-establish native plants, and restore balance across the ecosystem by managing invasive species such as deer.

Aaaron Kreisberg has extensive experience with habitat restoration. Since 2023, he has served as Plant Conservation Manager at Catalina Island Conservancy, where he manages invasive species as part of the organization’s long-term native habitat restoration plan.

In celebration of Earth Month, the Los Angeles and Riverside chapters of The Climate Reality Project connected for a picnic and garden tour at the California Botanic Garden in Claremont.

Charles Miller, LA Climate Reality’s chapter chair and a native plants expert, led the tour and shared details about trees and flowers found throughout the 86-acre gardens.

The California Botanic Garden is the largest botanic garden dedicated to California native flora. It features a curated collection of more than 22,000 California native plants, and it is dedicated to knowledge, conservation, and appreciation of the plants that make California one of the most biodiverse places on earth.

Ben’s development and delivery of a portfolio of community engagement and education focused programming have centered on climate justice, high-performance buildings, occupant health, corporate sustainability, and regional resilience, fostering a sense of connection and shared purpose.

USGBC-CA’s mission is to leverage the built environment to make California a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable place for all. Ben served on the Blue Ribbon Commission on Climate Action and Fire Safe Recovery following the 2025 LA fires. has produced a guide to sustainable and resilient rebuilding for communities impacted by the fires and has led or participated in numerous wildfire prevention and rebuilding workshops, trainings, and events.
