Tuesday club luncheon program at Doubletree, 11:30 to 1:30 November 3: “Stories That Tell Stories: Experiences from My Years at the Yugoslav War Crimes Tribunal” Speaker: Dr. Andrew Corin Public invited. Just $25 for luncheon and program.

The wars in the former Yugoslavia (1991–1999) saw widespread
violations of international humanitarian law that led to convictions
for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide by the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Dr. Corin recounts personal experiences from nearly a decade with the Tribunal’s Office of the Prosecutor, sharing stories that offer insights and lessons relevant to today’s world.
Dr. Andrew R. Corin, Professor Emeritus, Defense Language
Institute, received his Ph.D. in Slavic linguistics from UCLA in 1986.

He has taught Slavic languages and linguistics at Pomona College, UCLA, USC, and the Defense Language Institute and authored numerous publications. From 1999
through 2007, he served as a Research Officer in the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, where his work encompassed research, investigation, evidence analysis, and trial participation, including expert testimony before the Tribunal.

Featured presentation: “Bringing the Past to Life at the Alf Museum, from Dinosaurs to Dire Wolves”
Speaker: Dr. Andrew Farke, Director of the Raymond M. Alf Museum Paleontology

Paleontology, the study of Earth's prehistoric life, offers windows into our past, present, and future. Virtually anyone, with a little luck, can make a major discovery—which makes paleontology a perfect showcase for the scientific process and its societal
impacts. The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology
at The Webb Schools is not only fossil exhibits, but a
research and education center that engages high school
students in real science. This talk, by museum director
Dr. Andy Farke, will tell the unique origins and unique
mission of the country's only paleontology museum on a
high school campus.

Andy Farke earned a B.Sc. in Geology from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and a
Ph.D. in Anatomical Sciences at Stony Brook University. He joined the staff at the Alf Museum in 2008,
as curator of paleontology. His research interests focus on the evolution and functional morphology of
the ceratopsians, or horned dinosaurs.

“Walter C. Veazie Goes to Red Mountain City and Other Tales of Mining in the Old West” Speaker: Anne Sonner

This genealogy search started with a packet of old envelopes that were in a family scrapbook. Anne’s great-grandfather, after serving in the Civil War when a teenager, worked at a gold mine in Montana Territory. Take a trip down a historical rabbit hole to the wild days of the Old West mining towns.

Anne has been doing family history research on and off for 14 years. A graduate of Pitzer College, she has been secretary of the University Club for a while.

Strom C Thacker
Speaker: Dr. Strom C. Thacker, President, Pitzer College

Thacker is the seventh president of Pitzer College, starting the job in 2023. He graduated from Pomona College with a degree in international relations and received master’s and doctoral degrees in political science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Previously, he served as a dean and professor at Union College and professor at Boston University. His academic research focuses on the political economy of development, both globally and in Latin America. Thacker’s selection as Pitzer president marks the first time that Pitzer has been led by a graduate of the Claremont Colleges.

Jim Elsasser’s career in public education
spans more than 30 years. He is in his 14th year as superintendent. He earned BA and MA degrees from Azusa Pacific University and a PhD in Educational Leadership from USC.
Nancy Treser- Osgood worked in
alumni relations for 30 years at Claremont Graduate University, Pomona
College (her alma mater), and Pitzer College. She has been an active
volunteer with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education
(CASE) since 1990. Most recently, she represented District VII on the CASE Board of Trustees. Nancy was elected to the CUSD School Board in 2013 and served two terms.

Gather at 11:30, lunch served at 12:00, fellowship and program follow. Just $25 and the public is invited.
