The JEC is boosting the launch of this year’s National Systems-Impacted Writers’ Contest (Submission Deadline: February 14, 2026), hosted by the University of Southern California’s Dornsife Prison Education Project.

Our theme this year is Rhythms, Rituals, Regimens - the small and large patterns that give shape to a life: the things we repeat, the routines that ground us, the habits that free us or bind us, the sounds or gestures or practices that accumulate meaning over time. We invite a wide range of approaches from writers and artists.

The contest is open-genre and open to writers who identify as systems-impacted in any way. Full details, guidelines, and submission instructions are in the above flyer!

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Bernie Hernandez will no longer be working with the Justice Education Center. We are grateful for everything Bernie has brought to the JEC as our Prison College Liaison, and we want to honor the impact he has made at Pitzer College and across the 5Cs.

Bernie has been a dedicated and invaluable presence at the JEC and Claremont community - as a community member, and through his incredible commitment facilitating the Inside Out Pathway to BA program.

Bernie graduated from Pitzer College in 2023 with a BA while incarcerated at Norco. As a student, Bernie was a leader and advocate for his peers, uplifting their voices by serving as a Student Senate Representative. He was also selected as the commencement speaker for the 2024 Chicano Latino Student Affairs graduation, an honor that speaks to his leadership and influence at the 5Cs.

We are incredibly sad to see Bernie go, and extend our support as he embarks on his next chapter.

Thank you for everything Bernie!
