Claremont Sugar-River Rotary Honors Earth Day🤩
For the past five years, the Claremont-Sugar River Rotary Club has honored Earth Day by organizing a community-wide Spring clean-up. Partnering with the City of Claremont, local businesses, nonprofits and residents, the Club has led initiatives to beautify the community. As a result, more people are involved in removing litter and habits are changing.
Each year with the help of city officials, the Club identifies litter hotspots. These are roadways or city assets where litter exists in abundance. The Club then works with its partners to organize events to address these areas over a specified timeframe. This year, clean-up efforts began on April 25 and ended on May 3rd. During that time, over 40 large bags of litter were removed from the landscape. However, that amount was certainly higher as residents also picked up litter outside of organized events.
As much as this might sound, the amount of litter collected was less than previous years. Whole neighborhoods are now engaged in keeping their areas litter free. Residents are not only picking up litter on Earth Day, but also throughout the year. It is confirmation that Rotary Clubs, regardless of size, can create sustainable change.
