🌈 Pride in Numbers

Access to healthcare is only part of the picture.

The 2021 Oregon LGBTQIA2S+ 55+ Adult Survey found that many LGBTQIA2S+ older adults also face unmet social support needs, barriers to mental health and substance use services, discrimination, abuse, and social isolation. Many respondents reported not feeling comfortable sharing their identity with peers or providers, highlighting the ongoing need for more affirming aging and care systems.

These findings helped inform Senate Bill 99 (2023) and continue to guide efforts to ensure LGBTQIA2S+ older adults are seen, respected, and supported in every Oregon community.

This Pride Month, we celebrate the strength, contributions, and lived experiences of LGBTQIA2S+ older adults while working toward a future where everyone can age with dignity, connection, and belonging.

🌈 Identity does not end at death.

For many transgender and nonbinary people, records and systems do not always reflect who they were in life. When identity is erased after death, it affects more than dignity. It can also lead to inaccurate data that shapes research, funding, and policy decisions.

That's why the Oregon LGBTQ+ Aging Coalition and partners are working toward a Respect After Death Act for the 2027 legislative session. The goal is simple: ensure people are honored and remembered as they lived.

Today is a milestone for Oregon. By becoming an Age-Friendly State, we are embracing the changes in our population and committing to communities where everyone can thrive.

Now, the work continues as we gear up to create a Multi-Sector Plan for Aging (MPA) that builds a more connected, responsive, and inclusive future; one that makes Oregon a great place to grow up and grow old. AGE+ is so proud to be leading this work with our partners and with communities across Oregon. This work belongs to all of us, and we need voices from all corners of the state to help shape what comes next.

Last week, a special celebration was held to honor Roger Tofte, creator of the Enchanted Forest, and the lasting contributions he made to Oregon. In 2024, AGE+ was honored to celebrate his achievements with an Ageless Award.

Roger’s life was defined by love and persistence. Through creativity and determination, he created a place where a sense of wonder could come alive for generations of Oregonians. His vision lives on, reminding us what is possible when we choose to dream boldly.

Proud to be part of this work advancing housing solutions that support stability, safety, and dignity for older Oregonians!!

Today, I announced four major housing actions to help older Oregonians live safely, independently, and with dignity in the communities they call home.

These initiatives will expand affordable housing, support critical home repairs, and help older adults experiencing homelessness move back into stable housing. Every Oregonian, regardless of age, should have a safe place to call home

AGE+ is proud to serve as the fiscal sponsor of the Oregon LGBTQ Aging Coalition! This is an exciting step forward in strengthening visibility and building capacity for LGBTQ+ older adults across Oregon. We are thrilled to see this work grow and expand statewide!

The only coalition in Oregon focused on supporting older LGBTQ+ adults is moving from a fully volunteer endeavor to a more organized, fiscally-sponsored effort thanks to a new partnership.The Oregon
