Closing the Health Gap President Renee Mahaffey Harris was honored to join a panel at the Third Annual State of Cancer Caucus with the and Hamilton County Commissioners.

The discussion highlighted the urgency: Hamilton County sees about 4,700 cancer diagnoses and 1,600 cancer deaths each year, with rates exceeding state and national averages.

Local health leaders and survivors spoke about how cancer affects families across generations and why we must work together on prevention, early detection, support and lifestyle factors we can control.

That’s what “We Must Save Us” and Do Right! means: showing up for one another and doing right by our communities, families and showing up for our ourselves.

Men’s health deserves attention at every age.

From doctors focused on heart disease to conversations about diabetes, this is a chance to learn, ask questions and take steps to care for your health.

The numbers show why these conversations matter:
➡️Black men’s age-adjusted death rate from major cardiovascular diseases is 38% higher than the rate for U.S. men overall.
➡️Black men also have a 67% higher prostate cancer incidence rate than White men and are more than twice as likely to die from the disease.

‼️And younger men shouldn’t assume they’re too young to pay attention.

About 1 in 5 U.S. adults ages 18–39 has high blood pressure, yet fewer than 3 in 10 young adults with hypertension know they have it.

Today, Closing the Health Gap President Renee Mahaffey Harris joined community leaders for a fireside chat on cancer and community impact at the Hamilton County Third Annual State of Cancer.

Cancer affects our communities in disproportionate ways, including in rates of death. Hearing from leaders across the community reminds us that this work takes all of us—and strengthens our commitment to the fight.
