Think about the small things that brighten your day: a favorite song, a quick prayer, a neighbor waving from across the street.

Joy isn't accidental, but it's made up of the moments we create, the things we nurture, and the things we offer to the people around us. Sometimes that joy comes in the form of a hot meal or a box of food from a food pantry, and other times it comes in the form of a simple act of prayer.

On this National Day of Joy, at The Salvation Army Potomac Division, we’re choosing to add little sparks of joy to our day, and to pass them along to someone who needs a lift.✨

Happy National Day of Joy! 💛

We would like to welcome to the New River Valley, Captains Adrian and Karen Twinney. Their time here will begin June 28th for their Welcome Sunday. Join us at 11:00am.

Captains Adrian and Karen Twinney are rounding into their 15th year with The Salvation Army as Commissioned Officers prior to that both worked in the social Service field. Adrian and Karen have been married for 34 years and have two adult children, Derek, who is working in ministry and Stephen who is in the Air Force. Adrian has a Bachelor of Social Work Thew University of Texas at Arlington and a bachelors in Christians Studies from Asbury University. Karen has a BS in Sociology from Howard Payne University.
They both come from a background of social work, both love God, follow God and his vision for where they are asked to lead and understand that if you do not address the crisis issues that people are in sometimes they cannot hear what God has for them because they are too worried about their next meal, and where to live.
Adrian & Karen both also believe that it is only by active community collaboration can real change happen and strive to show that in everything they do. With their background and their Love of God they also understand that ultimately, they will be asked by God, but did you tell them about salvation and walking with Him? Every thought, every plan involves God and his leading. In every appointment they have looked to God for inspiration concerning how to lead each corps and will be looking towards him and his appointed people to lead New River Valley Corps.

Join us and giving them a warm welcome!

Have you felt the joy that comes from giving without expecting anything back?

There’s a special kind of joy that comes from giving with a full heart when no one’s watching, the kind that reminds us we’re part of something bigger than ourselves. It’s the kind of joy that fills your heart long after the moment has passed.

If you’d like to share that joy in our community, you’re welcome to support the work happening in our community. ♥️

The last and final day of VBS wrapped up yesterday. We learned about how God‘s power sets us free! We talked about how Paul and Silas were thrown into prison and while they were in prison, they sang and praised God. It was a great reminder to know that God is always with us, no matter the circumstance.

School may pause for summer, but learning doesn’t have to. Summer doesn’t need to be a season where kids fall behind. ☀️📉

At The Salvation Army, we want summer to be a season where your children leap forward. And we are committed to this statement!

From Summer Sleepaway Camps for a week-long immersive experience that encourages independence and lasting memories, to youth programs and summer music conservatories, The Salvation Army gives children and teenagers a place to learn, play, explore, and stay rooted in community.

We help young minds stay bright.✨

Day 3 & 4 of Vacation Bible School we learned about how God is always with us and God sent a Savior! Tonight we will learn about how Gods power sets us free.

We have had a fun time learning Bible stories, making fun crafts, and eating good snacks!

Tonight is the final day of VBS and we have a lot of fun in store. We have been raising money for World Services to help the Salvation Army overseas and we have raised $400. Which means 3 of our leaders will be whip creamed in the face! ☄️🌟✨

There’s something admirable about the World Cup ⚽. How is it that one game has the power to bring thousands of people together, cheering with one voice? 📣 Giving creates the same sense of unity, as one act of kindness impacts an entire community and lifts up neighbors in need, regardless of their language or background. That’s something worth cheering! You can support the mission in our community and give in the way that feels right to you. This season, join the team that gives with joy and let your generosity turn it into something that brings real transformation in the lives of our neighbors. https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usa-southern-territory/potomac/

On Day 2 of VBS we learned about God’s promise through Abraham and how even in his old age he gave him a son. Just like God kept his promise with Abraham, even in the waiting he will also keep his promises with us! 🪐

It’s Day three of VBS and we will be talking about Jonah! If you need something for the kids to do tonight and you want to have them join us, we will start at 5:30 PM. We would love to have you. ☄️🚀
