This week, the AMA Foundation had the opportunity to connect with physicians, medical students, and supporters at gatherings in Orange County and Los Angeles.

In Orange County, California Surgeon General Dr. Diana E. Ramos shared meaningful remarks about the impact of our programs, while Keck Medicine of USC student Matt Lee spoke about his experience in our Leadership Development Institute.

In Los Angeles, we heard from George A. Fouras, MD DFAACAP, speaker of the California Medical Association House of Delegates, and Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine student José Barrera, who shared how scholarship support has impacted his medical education and training.

Across both gatherings, we were grateful for the opportunity to share more about the AMA Foundation’s work and hear directly from members of the community who make it possible.

Through $10,000 scholarships, the program recognizes exceptional medical students entering their third or final year of medical school who demonstrate leadership, academic excellence, service, and a commitment to improving patient care.

For more than a decade, the AMA Alliance and AMA Foundation have partnered to support medical students through the Grassroots Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship. Thanks to the generosity of AMA Alliance members, the program has awarded a total of $190,000 to 19 future physicians committed to advancing women's and children's health through service, research, and community engagement.

Improving the Nation's health extends beyond the work we do every day.

Last week, the AMA Foundation joined colleagues from across the American Medical Association for an employee service week, partnering with My Block My Hood My City to support neighborhood beautification efforts in Chicago.

We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside dedicated volunteers and local partners in advancing a shared commitment to stronger, healthier communities.

Congratulations to the 66 recipients of the AMA Foundation's 2026 Physicians of Tomorrow scholarships.

As these outstanding medical students begin their final year of medical school, each will receive a $10,000 scholarship to help reduce financial barriers and support their journey toward becoming physician leaders.

We extend our sincere thanks to the United Health Foundation for funding 10 scholarships this year through its Health Care Scholars United program.

The American Medical Association Foundation is proud to announce the 2026 Physicians of Tomorrow scholarship recipients. This year, 66 exceptional medical students from across the country were selected to receive $10,000 scholarships as they begin their final year of medical school this fall.

The AMA Foundation is proud to support medical students who are creating meaningful change in their communities.

Through AMA Foundation funding, students across the country have partnered with local nonprofits, food banks, free clinics, and outreach organizations to address critical challenges, including food insecurity, housing instability, and access to essential resources.

These student-led initiatives are delivering tangible support to communities while providing future physicians with valuable leadership and service experience.

We're excited to welcome David H. Aizuss, MD, to the AMA Foundation Board of Directors.

Dr. Aizuss is a board-certified ophthalmologist, founder of Ophthalmology Associates of the Valley, and the immediate past chair of the American Medical Association Board of Trustees. A dedicated AMA member since his days as a medical student at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, he has spent nearly five decades serving the profession through leadership roles at the local, state, and national levels.

His longstanding commitment to physician leadership, advocacy, and organized medicine will be a tremendous asset to the AMA Foundation. We look forward to the experience and perspective he brings to advancing our mission.

We're excited to welcome Shireen Saxena, MD, to the AMA Foundation Board of Directors.

Dr. Saxena is a combined internal medicine and pediatrics resident at the University of Southern California and Los Angeles General Medical Center. She earned her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, graduating with distinctions in research, global health, and community health.

An active member of the American Medical Association since 2017, Dr. Saxena has served in a variety of leadership roles across the Medical Student Section and Resident & Fellow Section, championing physician engagement and organized medicine throughout her training.

We look forward to the perspective she will bring to the AMA Foundation through her commitment to patient care, physician leadership, and service. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Saxena to the board.
