When Surprise first joined the HECC Clubhouse, she never imagined her passion for crocheting could lead to real opportunities. With mentorship, encouragement, and access to resources, she began refining her craft and exploring what it could become.

“Before joining the Clubhouse, I never imagined that crocheting could create opportunities for my future. The Clubhouse encouraged me to take my talent seriously and explore ways to grow.”
Along the way, Surprise built skills in business management, video editing, and technology while growing her confidence and leadership. Stories like hers show what’s possible when young people are given the support they need to thrive.

Want to see this impact in action and support more stories like Surprise’s?
Join us at the HECC Program Showcase on June 11 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. and learn how you can get involved.

Fresh paint, fresh start!🖌️Thank you to Ulta Beauty for volunteering at Family Shelter Service of Metropolitan Family Services DuPage! Volunteers spent the day painting and refreshing some of our rooms where victims of domestic violence escape abuse and rebuild their lives.

FSS of MFSD is the only emergency domestic violence shelter in DuPage County. Together, we are building community and providing lifesaving services and critical programs to serve our clients as they restore their lives.

Our YouthBuild youth leaders recently attended the 2026 Illinois Leadership Summit in Springfield, where they spent three days building skills, confidence, and connections.

They participated in hands-on construction projects, collaborated with other YouthBuild programs, and met with state legislators to share their stories and advocate for continued support. They also toured the Capitol and were recognized on both the House and Senate floors.

We are incredibly proud of the leadership, growth, and impact they demonstrated.

We’re excited to celebrate Katherine Erickson and Melina Lindsey, who were honored this weekend with the Community Literacy Inspiration Award at LitWorks’ annual fundraiser, “A Book That Changed My Life.”

Through initiatives like our craft club and adult education open house, they’ve helped create welcoming spaces where people can connect, learn and express themselves through literacy and creativity.

LitWorks captured it perfectly:
“In a time of darkness and chaos, it was so lovely to hear about this event and see the joy it brought the people who attended and participated.”

We’re so grateful for the heart they bring to this work and proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition.

Please join us in congratulating Katherine and Melina! 🎉
