The Illinois Court-Based Rental Assistance Program is accepting applications between May 27, 2026 and June 22, 2026. CBRAP provides emergency rental assistance to tenants and housing providers in Illinois with pending cases in eviction court. Applicants may qualify for up to $10,000 that can be applied to past due rent, up to $700 for court costs, and up to two months' future rent to prevent housing displacement. Evanston officials hosted a virtual Tenant Resource Webinar Thursday night, amid a city-wide push for tenants’ rights.

Philip DeVon, an attorney at the Metropolitan Tenants Organization, presented information to renters about tenants’ rights via Zoom.
DeVon’s talk focused on the Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance, which he said “governs all rights and responsibilities” for tenants and landlords in the city.

The labor movement and affordable housing have a long history in the United States. The greatest success is with the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America's affordable housing cooperative in New York City in the 1920's. The affordable co-ops, including those sponsored by unions, survived The Great Depression and pioneered this housing model.
